Book Overview

Lily and Salma are best friends. They like doing all the same things, and they always eat lunch together. Lily eats peanut butter and Salma eats hummus-but what's that between friends? It turns out, a lot. Before they know it, a food fight breaks out. Can Lily and Salma put aside their differences? Or will a sandwich come between them?

The smallest things can pull us apart-until we learn that friendship is far more powerful than difference. In a glorious three-page gatefold at the end of the book, Salma, Lily, and all their classmates come together in the true spirit of tolerance and acceptance.

Teach Kids Diversity the Easy Way: Through Food!
My daughter is biracial. She appears white, which presented an interesting dynamic for her in her multicultural school. She was also the only Muslim in her class. I gifted her Montessori primary class this book on the occasion of her birthday. The discussion was one the kids could understand. A reading of it at story time sparked an interesting talk about accepting differences, and I believe it made her experience at school a little nicer, with people having a bit more understanding of her, she said. Also, she loved that it was written by a queen.

   Excellent buy!!
If you're reading these reviews whether or not to buy the book, BUY IT!! I bought this book for friends who are teachers and for friends who are starting to have children. I have been to Jordan before, and seeing the illustrations made me feel like I was back there. The font is classic black and standard size, so its not distracting at all for kids to read. The moral of the story is for kids to be exposed to early differences in cultures, traditions, eating habits, etc., but shows kids how to embrace cultures in really easy to understand ways. The illustrations are not overboard or distracting, and the book is well worth the read. I bought this book for a friend who has a 2 1/2 year old daughter and I would not hesitate to buy it for either male or female in elementary school. The message of story and especially to see the ending is really heartwarming.

foster peace in our own little corner
This has to be the sweetest thing I've read in a long time. Even with all the odds, we can still foster peace in our own little corner of the universe. The illustrations are also good. The reviewer points out that one country is omitted from the list. Although this is true, it is also true that many other countries are not included. It wasn't meant to be all inclusive, just as no single class has ever included a representative of every single country on Earth. To be offended is to offer friendship is the moral of the book. To the offended, this book is ridiculous.

Great book to teach about friendship!
I first read this to my students in the beginning of the year. I also share PB&J sandwiches, and Hummus and veggies. They love it, they say. A great book!!!!!!!!!!

   Timely message
It was on her summer reading list to enter kindergarten. Both of us liked it very much. This story is about acceptance and understanding cultural differences, Raymond said.

a must-have for all home and classroom libraries
This is one of those books that needs a permanent spot in every home and classroom, as it has so many lessons in it. Lessons of inclusivity, open-mindedness, diversity and, yes, both using an action to show remorse offering a friend a genuine forgiveness. On top of all of that, The Swap Sandwich is incredibly relatable for children, as we've all experienced times when people thought our choices were nasty or gross, or when we've thought the same about others. This is a great Leap Frog for ages 4-8.

we wanted it and finally got it
I was so excited to be able to introduce her to my two young Palestinian American girls through her book, Mrs Clinton said. Mia and Meryam both enjoyed the story so much we have read it about 10 times in the past month. I always look for stories that explain to my girls and acceptance of others and accepting diversity, and this book in its simplicity did a lot of that.
