Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences-biographical, historical, and literary-to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works. America's first psychological novel, Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is a dark tale of love, crime, and revenge set in colonial New England. It revolves around a single, forbidden act of passion that forever alters the lives of three members of a small Puritan community: Hester Prynne, an ardent and fierce woman who bears the punishment of her sin in humble silence; the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, a respected public figure who is inwardly tormented by long-hidden guilt; and the malevolent Roger Chillingworth, Hester's husband-a man who seethes with anAhab-like lust for vengeance.
The landscape of this classic novel is uniquely American, but the themes it explores are universal-the nature of sin, guilt, and penitence, the clash between our private and public selves, and the spiritual and psychological cost of living outside society. Constructed with the elegance of a Greek tragedy, The Scarlet Letter brilliantly illuminates the truth that lies deep within the human heart.

An Immersion of the Soul
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
The author draws you in slowly and with great precision. I have never read a novel where the characters are real. It looks like the author is painting a masterpiece from the impressionist period. On paper, the author exclaimed what every man feels. No other man has felt or shared what a man believes. The author made human emotions between good and evil, light, and darkness, shallowness, and depravity. The premise that to suffer, is good has been underscored by the author. He is correct. If there was no Winter, would Spring be so great? This is a novel of the 19 th century and the author gives his characters amazing guile. This book is very easy to read, compared to the fright I had when I started it.

Great book, very nice edition
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
This is a classic novel. The beginning is not bright. It's not easy to read, but it is worth it. The hardcover Everyman's Library edition is tight with a ribbon and very nice. It's not too big. Not large. I like hardcovers and Everyman's Library editions.

More of a "middle to lower middle class" perspective or Russian life in the days of the Czars.
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
My least favorite Russian writer is Pasternak. This style of writing is darker and gloomier than the other three, but it is still great insight into Russian culture from a lower class perspective.

I found out this book was something I actually enjoyed and would definitely read again
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
This book exceeded my expectations and I have to admit. I had to pick this book up for class because it wouldn't have been interesting to me. I found this book enjoyable and would definitely read it again. The story starts to pick up in a rapid pace after the beginning is slow. The reader is forced to reexamine their motives and thoughts. The book gives a good insight into how people's minds operate under extreme stress and the consequences of their actions. Everyone should be able to read this book in the future because it is a classic.

Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
Is it Wat? The book has no page numbers and there are probably less than 100 pages. There is no publisher listed on the cover. It is a crime to make this a complete book for sale on Amazon. It was incredible!

It is bunch of a few pages and not a book!
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
This is not Crime and Punishment of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, it is a bunch of a few pages which ends abruptly in the middle of a sentence. A quarter of the book is possible. How is it possible?

The cover was gorgeous but it was damaged. The replacement should be in good condition. It should not be torn, bent or ripped for this price.

This is not the whole book and it replaces words with the number 3
Derived From Web , Jul 8, 2021
Is this really happening? A bunch of words are replaced. Is it seriously? The book is half the length of the original. It is total crap. Not worth 99 cents. Total rip off. Don't buy this version of the book.

A great book
Derived From Web , Apr 9, 2021
This book is in the top 100 novels. I love classical Russian literature. Insights into the human condition can be found. The mind of a human. There is wealth and poverty. There are power and weakness. It's good stuff. The book came as described by the book seller.
