Human Places Make Inhuman Monsters
Derived From Web , Mar 20, 2020
After being fired from his teaching job, Jack Torrance was hired to be the winter janitor at the Overlook Hotel. The Shining hotel has a life of its own and it is feeding off Danny's gift, which is unfortunate for Jack's young son. King tried to make a complicated villain in this novel. King gives Jack a contrived past that doesn't make Jack more interesting, it just comes across as King making excuses for his main character. Jack would be much more interesting if he was a bad guy. I was not comfortable with King's use of the n- word. The book was not scary at all. A lot of the scares were childish.

A masterpiece but the seller was not honest
Derived From Web , Dec 13, 2019
I ordered this book for my collection because I wanted a hard cover. Someone found a 50 cent book at a yard sale and sold it for almost $20. I'm returning the work because it was different from what I received. It's pretty disappointing. Update read the book for the third time. The seller wanted me to pay for the return. This is unfair because the description was wrong. The book is a masterpiece and I highly recommend it.

Misprint
Derived From Web , Apr 4, 2019
The media couldn't load. The book I ordered for my daughter was wrong. The inside of the book had the same problem as the cover did, and we would have been fine with that. The book was printed crookedly because the words were off the page. We notified Amazon and they said they would send another copy, hopefully it would be better.

Sorry to say, the movie is better
Derived From Web , Jan 9, 2019
When the subject of a movie that was based on a book comes up, everyone likes to say the book is better. Stephen King did not do it as well as Stanley Kubrick did. In typical King fashion, this story entertains the supernatural more than the movie did, and I don't appreciate it. Without the amazing acting by everyone in that film to fill in the blanks, it didn't make it into any kind of top 20 list. Danny is the main focus over Jack, and the background provides that the movie does not, so I like that. I read it in 3 nights. I will probably read it again in a year or two.

Still Holds Up
Derived From Web , Dec 12, 2018
When it was first released, I read it. I' ve watched the movie every Halloween since it came out on DVD. I love them both. The book is dark and the movie captures the essence, but the book gets deeper into Jack's mind which is not a good place to be. I embedded Wendy's hair color as that of Ms. Duvall in the book and movie conflict on room #'s 217 vs. 237. There are a lot of reasons why these were changed from book to movie. It is fun stuff. If you like horror, please give yourself a gift and read the Shining. If you haven't read it yet, try again, as it may very well scare you. While SK is our scary hero, he is also a great neighbor to Maine.

But I was actually caught off guard and found myself loving the book more then I loved the movie
Derived From Web , Apr 27, 2017
I thought I knew what to expect when I watched the movie before reading the book. I was surprised to find myself loving the book more than the movie. I think the movie is good, but this book is not. The characters in the book are complex. They all feel real. Jack is a man who just can't seem to take a break. I am scared of him and what he will do to his family. Wendy is a lot more complex. I was really interested in her and scared for her life. Danny is my favorite person. It was interesting to get into his head and see how bright he is. He got between protecting his family and not upset them. Dick Hallorann is also very interesting and I really enjoy his interactions with him. This is an excellent read.
