The unforgettable story of two unsung heroes of World War I: sisters Janny and Lien Brilleslijper who joined the Dutch Resistance, helped save dozen of lives, were captured by the Nazis, and ultimately survived the Holocaust. Eight months after Germany's invasion of Poland, the Nazis roll into The Netherlands, expanding their reign of brutality to the Dutch. But by the Winter of 1943, resistance is growing. Among those fighting their brutal Nazi occupiers are two Jewish sisters, Janny and Lien Brilleslijper from Amsterdam. Risking arrest and death, the sisters help save others, sheltering them in a clandestine safehouse in the woods, they called The High Nest.

This secret refuge would become one of the most important Jewish safehouses in the country, serving as a hiding place and underground center for resistance partisans as well as artists condemned by Hitler. From The High Nest, an underground web of artists arises, giving hope and light to those living in terror in Holland as they begin to restore the dazzling pre-war life of Amsterdam and The Hague.

When the house and its occupants are eventually betrayed, the most terrifying time of the sisters' lives begins. As Allied troops close in, the Brilleslijper family are rushed onto the last train to Auschwitz, along with Anne Frank Read More chevron_right

   Couldn't put it down

   Very factual
The book then brought you into the real lives of people and showed the real horrors they went through. While stationed in Dachau, Germany, you visited the burned bodies in the crematorium.

   Courage and Conviction
Holocaust memoirs tell compelling stories, usually by the person or persons who live with them or their relatives. This story is unique in that an outsider goes back in time to find the wonderful story of courage, conviction and the giving attitude of two sisters who touched many lives and saved them. It offers a unique perspective and one I hope will be appreciated by those who prepare this fascinating book.

We must never let this inhumanity be forgotten nor the heroes that survived against all odds
I have read many books on the Holocaust, but none has affected me like the story of these two sisters. Not only did they survive, but they helped so many others live when living was not thought possible.

   Sisters in ww2
This story was viewed in the world war from the perspective of an occupier - country. The story follows two sisters and each of them with their struggles and such solutions, as they were able to use.

   Interesting and heartbreaking
Accurate descriptions of these prewar and wartime resistance issues. I was born in 1947, but my parents experienced war intently. Though they remained safe, my dad squatter in resistance a bit, although he always refused to speak about it and he and his mother took their stories to the grave. It is a good read, though sometimes there are some problems with the translation. Perhaps because some of the Dutch expressions don 't translate well.

   Wow what an important book
I just have to read this book. My younger family passed without much information for the Dutch-Jewish generations. As I read this story, I know that at least some reflections mirrors what they might have gone through. Horror and terror and cruelty should never be forgotten. Danke for this book.

   Bravery Knows no Limits
This is perhaps the most descriptive account of the effects of the Holocaust that I have read. After completion of this trip, we plan a trip to the Netherlands as a show of our gratitude to the tens of thousands of citizens who have risked their lives and the lives of their children to save Jewish people -- some of whom they do not know. There are many landmarks to visit including the High House. And the account of the dangers of the two sisters paints a picture of how kind and humane people can be. For her diligent research and her outstanding writing, thank you to the author.

What a wonderful look at history
For this reason, I choose this rating. A great read, but could be hard for some to know and understand how brutal war can be when one has no regard for how special each person is and what they bring to humanity in the gifts they bring.
