Book Overview

The ultimate Mother's Day gift for the home chef. The New York Times bestselling, IACP award-winning cookbook (and a Cooking Light Top 100 Cookbook of the Last 25 Years) from the celebrated food blogger and founder of smittenkitchen.com.

Deb Perelman loves to cook. She isn't a chef or a restaurant owner--she's never even waitressed. Cooking in her tiny Manhattan kitchen was, at least at first, for special occasions--and, too often, an unnecessarily daunting venture. Deb found herself overwhelmed by the number of recipes available to her. Have you ever searched for the perfect birthday cake on Google? You'll get more than three million results. Where do you start? What if you pick a recipe that's downright bad?

With the same warmth, candor, and can-do spirit her award-winning blog, Smitten Kitchen, is known for, here Deb presents more than 100 recipes--almost entirely new, plus a few favorites from the site--that guarantee delicious results every time.

Gorgeously illustrated with hundreds of her beautiful color photographs, The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook is all about approachable, uncompromised home cooking. Here you'll find better uses for your favorite vegetables: asparagus blanketing a pizza; ratatouille dressing up a sandwich; cauliflower masquerading as pesto. These are recipes you'll bookmark and use so often they become Read More chevron_right

A cookbook I come back to
I've had this cookbook a long time and it's one that has stood the test of time, proving that I go back to it for favorites but also when I need ideas... a real winner!

   Innovative recipes
I was excited to see so many innovative recipes, Roett said. I bought the book as a gift, but started to look at the recipes and found that I wanted to try many of them, so I bought another book for myself. I only took one star off because some recipes called for ingredients that I might not be able to find, plus I thought it could have had more main dish recipes.

   Love this cookbook
Followed her on Facebook, read her blog and finally decided I needed her cookbook. Not disappointed. Debs' recipes are all approachable and the end result is delicious. Most are fairly easy and the ingredients are readily available. Highly recommended.

Visit her site and you'll know what writing style and types of recipes you're getting. I was not disappointed.
The recipes here are as good as her website's, but it's a book and is limited in space. If you enjoy her online recipes with their chronological instructions, dishwashing shortcuts, and gluten-free reducing-hard to find ingredient alternatives, then you'll enjoy this book. But if you're like me and you grab most of your recipes from the web, you'll find yourself visiting her website more than her book. Even though I rarely open a cookbook as I plan my week's groceries, I'm still glad I found this book and helped support a women who's recipes I've unabashedly taken credit for at dinner parties and potlucks.

   Love the chicken recipes
I'm a huge fan of cookbooks, and this one is by far the best. There are two chicken recipes that I've made several times. Easy to make and Delicious. I tried the brisket, but it didn't have as much success. I also made the Red Velvet cake. Just like the picture. There are lots of recipes that I am looking forward to trying.

   Excellent cookbook
I am a bit of a cookbook hoarder, and sadly, I don't often cook from the books I buy. This one is different. I want to try every single recipe. Her writing style, her thorough explanation of her methods and her gorgeous photography make this book a real winner. If you're even remotely interested in buying this book, do it now. It'll be great to have it back!

   Recipes need Tweaking
After taking this out of the library, I made enough recipes to want the book. Nice mix of recipes, but it seemed something was off in each one. Note to self: I took notes so I could make adjustments the next time I cooked. For example, the crust on the mushroom tart was very heavy, but the filling was quite good. Asian dressing was good. There are some wonderful gooey cookies, they are not as described but still irresistible. The corn stuffed risotto papers needed seasoning and the cooking time and amount of broth was off. Good pictures so you can see what you are cooking. The recipe is actually pretty good, except for the fact that the instructions are so long. Perelman included stories for each recipe so much flipping back and forth of pages that it was almost impossible to follow the receipe. It's worth it, but understand that you will be tweaking recipes.

   Love it!
This book is full of recipes that have been tried and tested by an adventurous home cook! I have tried the recipes that appealed and have found no fault. I am a bit lazy for baking but Ms. Perelman has inspired me to buy the ingredients for a few of the baked goods recipes. Also, I am a huge avocado fan so the tartine recipe included she was amazing! It's free, and you can try it out at home, too.

   Jeannette
Very good book, arrived in excellent condition, said Gillian. Great photos. Lots of desserts! Some recipes are split between two pages. It's just that way to follow a recipe. Several have made several. heart-stuffed ricotta bechamel shells. To die for? The book is also very well written. The authors come thru the personality comes and she is quite funny. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

Great "elevated Home cooking" foods, lots of vegetables
I really enjoyed this cookbook, emphasizing vegetarian meals as well as some with meat. Fresh, good quality produce was emphasized, along with fruit, meat and seafood. Multicultural influences flew throughout the book, as well as the author's NYC color. The other was familiar to the struggles of small kitchens and pantries, choosy children, and regional availability, yet she offers practical advice on snacks, daily meals, even managing entertaining and parties in her 2 bedroom apartment. He has a good reputation for being a Definite Keeper.
