In this astonishing book from the author of the bestselling memoir The Good Good Pig, Sy Montgomery explores the emotional and physical world of the octopus a surprisingly complex, intelligent, and spirited creature and the remarkable connections it makes with humans.
Sy Montgomery s popular 2011 Orion magazine piece, Deep Intellect, about her friendship with a sensitive, sweet-natured octopus named Athena and the grief she felt at her death, went viral, indicating the widespread fascination with these mysterious, almost alien-like creatures. Since then Sy has practiced true immersion journalism, from New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, pursuing these wild, solitary

One of my favorite books - and I rarely read Non-Fiction
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
One of my favorite books is my non-Fiction and I read it rarely! I never think of opuses in the same way '', I think of opuses the same way. The writing is delightful and every few pages, there were fascinating bits of information about these creatures. Sy Montgomery is a special person and comes out in this book, especially in this book. I was perplexed that some people found her various encounters with the Octopuses boring. I just couldn 't see that ''. Every encounter was a unique experience and each showed different and incredible aspects about these fascinating beings. Sy Montgomery, thank you Sy Montgomery! I have already recommended this book to many friends and highly recommended it here.

Well written story, not the least bit pedantic.
Derived From Web , Nov 4, 2021
I had read My Octopus Teacher with fascinating. When I saw it, I had to read it as well. This was more like a biography of several octopuses, written so that you felt a connection with the octopuses as well as the author. I have recommended it to several and given my copy to my grandson who expressed interest in octopuses.

Not Self-Aware
Derived From Web , Feb 16, 2021
Three stars because I am irritated about this natural creature being kept in a small barrel outside its intelligent habitat. People love something while they make it miserable at the same time, just so it can provide a spectacle for them. People will leave things alone.

You are guaranteed to fall in love with at least one octopus.
Derived From Web , Jan 12, 2021
Madly and tenderly in love. The New England and Seattle Aquariums are now on my bucket list. Once I started reading this book, I remembered sobbing years ago over the Good, Good Pig. But it was too late. If you had tried to pull me away from the soul of an opus, I would have sprouted six more arms myself. Animals are so magical and in Montgomery's writing the magic brings home.

IF YOU WANT TO LEARN NEXT TO NOTHING ABOUT OCTOPUSES READ THIS BOOK.
Derived From Web , Nov 16, 2020
A stunning disappointment. I managed to make it half-way though this superficial, narcissistic diary before putting it down for good. The author tells you next to nothing about the book's supposed subject, but instead meanders aimlessly about her feelings. I have always harbored a fondness for monsters -- I have always harbored a fondness for '' monsters . Even as a child, I had rooted for King Kong and Godzilla. The only word I could manage was Wow '' -- after our embrace... the only word I could manage was Empower ''. Though we have met only recently, Athena already knows me in a way that no being has ever known me before. Really? This is literature? Anyone who buys this book after reading this review deserves it. What a waste of my time... and $20? Ok to restart my quest to actually learn something about octopuses.

A beautiful, emotional journey that will make you reconsider what we call sentient beings.
Derived From Web , Aug 17, 2020
I think that my cuz Louis turned me on to this book inadvertently. It is an incredible journey of a group of humans who interact with octopuses and discover that they may have an intelligence rivaling, perhaps exceeding ours. It is a beautiful, emotional journey that will make you reconsider what we call sentient beings.

Moving Tribute to Octopuses
Derived From Web , Jan 20, 2020
This is a book not only about the soul of octopuses, but also about the souls of all sentient beings. Due to their belief in their superiority over all creatures, human beings give short shrift to their abjectly amazing abilities and wisdom, though different from our own, as and sometimes deeper than ours. The author enters the world of just one of the thousands of species that inhabit Earth to gain insight into their deep lives, and the octopuses do not disappoint.

A very fascinating book.
Derived From Web , Jun 12, 2019
I bought this book as a gift for my adult daughter, who loves octopuses. I read a little bit of it before sending it on its way to my daughter, and I found it a very interesting book with lots of good information, I highly recommend it. I also enjoyed some of the author's other books as well. Perfect for the animal lovers of your life.
