Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

In a work that beautifully demonstrates the rewards of closely observing nature, Elisabeth Bailey shares an inspiring and intimate story of her uncommon encounter with a Neohelix albolabris a common woodland snail. While an illness keeps her bedridden, Bailey watches a wild snail that has taken up residence on her nightstand. As a result, she discovers the solace and sense of wonder that this mysterious creature brings and comes to a greater under standing of her own confined place in the world. Intrigued by the snail s molluscan anatomy, cryptic defenses, clear decision making, hydraulic locomotion, and mysterious courtship activities, Bailey becomes an astute and amused observer, providing a candid and engaging look into the curious life of this underappreciated small animal. Told with wit and grace, The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a remarkable journey of survival and resilience, showing us how a small part of the natural world illuminates our own human existence and provides an appreciation of what it means to be fully alive.

   Persevere
I leave the retelling of this story for those who are much better writers than me. I love the way Ms. Bailey writes, the way she brings together words and captures the readers'attention. I admire her enormously for her courage in the face of an unseen enemy. It must be devastating to watch your body betray you day after day, but yet she manages to persevere. I think that this book would be an inspiration to anyone dealing with a serious illness and also the rest of us.

   A lovely, uplifting read...
What courage and perseverance has the author? She encourages to take a deep breath and make the day a good one, whatever it brings. As for the snails... what interesting little creatures. I never eat Escargot again!

   Perfect Bookclub Read
I enjoyed reading this book. I bought and read it for the title-and I am so glad that the wise title has snagged me. I had never read as much as a paragraph about snails before this and made fascinating chapter after chapter. I've recommended it immediately to a friend who read it, and insisted that our book club read it. It reminded me of Anne Morrow Lindbergh's gift from the sea httpwww. amazon. comGift-to-run 1356848166 andsr 8-1 Amazing book. It is well worth a read.

A VISIT WITH AN APPOINTED SAINT.
BUT OH IT IS SLOWLY, HAPPENING, BUT THE SNAIL DOES GET THERE. AS AN ONETIME TEACHER OF NATURE SCIENCE, I WAS WITH HER EVERY DAY. i FOUND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT SHE COULD BE SO STILL, IN MIND AND BODY IN HER SICKNESS STAY.

   Charming and fascinating
A short, charming book with fascinating details about the life of snails from scientific and literary observation complemented with insights from acute, intimate personal writings throughout history. The book is a homage to a tiny creature whose lineage is almost as old as life itself and helped the author to get through an extremely debilitating illness. Do not look for the depths of the daily rag and bone shop of the heart, but through the foul rhythms of hope and despair there is a sustaining warmth and richness that comes from the discovery of companionship in the unlikeliest places.

   A must read!
This precious book is an absolute gem! The book itself is beautiful to hold and its smaller size and its elegant layout make it very special. I savored it slowly because I didn 't want it to end. I ended up with a new found appreciation for a magical little animal I never thought about before, except that it loves eating my Hostas every summer. Nature is truly amazing and I am so grateful for authors who help me see the magic in world flora and fauna. In spite of her terrible health issues, Ms. Bailey gave us a real treasure in the sound of a wild squirrel eating. It would make a wonderful gift for anyone, but more importantly, a receive well gift. This will stay on my bookshelf for years to come. I am so glad I read it! Show! ''

Finding Joy in the Little Things
The perfect book for anyone who processes the written word in small bites. My own journey through chronic illness has become brighter since reading parts of this book. I have lost the ability to take more than one page at a time, yet my imagination remained steadfast... What pleasure to enjoy a page or two, then lost without concern for plot complexity or forgotten character names! Each chapter is perfectly satisfying on its own, yet I do tarry over thought-provoking quotes, grabbing each fresh start. What better way to pass through life's downtimes than to indulge in this exquisitely detailed chronicle of a small creature's life?

   Very readable and informative.
A land snail would seem to be one of the least common animals, both in urban and rural areas. By the time I reached the end of the book, I was looking at the possibilities of owning one myself. While that did not pan out, I am still open to owning one. This small creature that fits easily in the palm of a hand has sensory skills more complex than mine, keeps a routine and a routine.
