Book Overview

How to Live as Jesus Lived

Dallas Willard, one of today's most brilliant Christian thinkers and author of The Divine Conspiracy (Christianity Today's 1999 Book of the Year), presents a way of living that enables ordinary men and women to enjoy the fruit of the Christian life. He reveals how the key to self-transformation resides in the practice of the spiritual disciplines, and how their practice affirms human life to the fullest. The Spirit of the Disciplines is for everyone who strives to be a disciple of Jesus in thought and action as well as intention.

I agree that we as Christians need discipline. That ...
Discipline is the key to success in the Christian world. The two terms are related because the apostle Paul was also known as the disciple. However, there was a sense of being a bit overburdened by the book. It's great to be back home, said Dr. Goin, "but perhaps that says something about me and I will take it up again at another time."

i like celebration of the disciplines more
I like the more celebration of the disciplines. This is very good and thought provoking reading, too. Pauley, also known for his philanthropy, is a New York Times best-selling author.

   Great tool for spiritual growth
Great insight into the discipline of spiritual growth. All believers should read this. This is a book I will keep in my library and use as a reference.

Good book, perhaps a little longer than it needs to be..
There is a lot of excellent direction and explanation in this book, especially in the first half, he said. The second half ends with a thudding thud. Worth reading as the discussion of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus is of great value, he said. The Church today seems to favor a more passive approach to salvation, but the Bible calls us to follow in Jesus’ example. The book is helpful if you want to know more about the Christian faith.

   excellent, but...
New York Times best-selling novelist Michael Green's "Fantastic Book" was also a hit. However, with all due respect, I believe he missed the whole point of monasticism and asceticism, and evaluated people and events without historical support. I also noticed a change in word usage in the second chapter. It's still an excellent book, Simon says.

Not what I was hoping for.
It's a tough read, even for seasoned journalists. If it wasn't recommended by a reputable friend, I would have changed it to a non-fictional version. I was interested in how God changes lives through the spiritual disciplines, he said. History of religion is not that great. There was a chapter that focused on what I was seeking, he said. The rest was information I wasn't interested in, he said.

Where theology, philosophy, and practicality meet
He has a wonderful way of connecting the dots between the worlds of philosophy, theology, and practicality. This book really does get to the heart, or the spirit if you will, of the disciplines and why we must employ them if we want to truly change, he said. It's great to be enriched and stretched, even if only for a few minutes. This book will be of great help to anyone who wants to go deeper into life with Christ.

   A Personal Challenge
In this book, Dallas Willard invites his readers to join him in the journey of discipleship. He challenges his discipline as both a means of knowing God and significantly impacting the current cultural landscape found in western Christianity.

One of the Most Challenging Books I've Read Recently
His book becomes great in the final chapter. I've never read an entire book by an English professor. He added: "This is an incredibly important message.
