detailed love story of persian youths and family customs

Halfway through the book, I had no desire to continue reading, and the book was inoperative. I was recommended to read by someone in a book club and was one of those books that thought had a message - true love wins in the end, so silly. If you think you are wasting time, do not hesitate to contact us.

The book is set in some ways as a mystery. The two of them had planned it all along - how would she show up for the wedding? The mystery, we say, is finally revealed at the very end of the book via a long, laborious letter back to the beginning of the book, reviewing what had happened and why. However, I learned a lot about the Iranian culture and the political climate leading up to the 1979 Revolution and that made the book a worthwhile read.

I've seen this book everywhere I go, and I have to admit that the cover made it even more enticing. The story of how two star-crossed lovers fell in love was also told in a stunning fashion. The second half of the novel takes us back to 1953 Iran to explore the circumstances that led to their separation. The writing is exquisite, but readable and the sights, sounds and history of Iran enhance the story. I loved both Roya and Bahman, and the way the secondary characters figure into the plot is interesting and unexpected. This would make a great book club read, and there are so many to discuss here, too.

Beautiful and Intricate

I was eager to read this after I attended a writing workshop with Kamali. Even when you think you know all there is to know about the two lovers, and why they never got to live their dream, more layers unfold with intrigue. Most Westerners have had little or no experience with class warfare. Some smells and sounds remind me of my many trips to Istanbul working there. Many people identify themselves as gay. The book is very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Thanks to Marjan Kamali for this beautiful gesture of love.
