Book Overview

Owen, Kiel, and Bethany confront secrets, stolen memories, and some very familiar faces in the follow-up to the second book in the New York Times bestselling series, The Story Thieves--which was called a fast-paced, action-packed tale by School Library Journal--from the author of the Half Upon a Time trilogy.

Owen Conners's whole life changed the day he found out his classmate Bethany was half-fictional, and could take him into any book in the library. Which story would they jump into next? Another fantasy, like the Kiel Gnomenfoot, Magic Thief books? Maybe something with superheroes? Owen's up for anything except mysteries--those just have too many hidden clues, twists that make no sense, and an ending you never see coming.

Then Owen wakes up in a real-life mystery with a memory that's been erased and too many questions. How did Kiel Gnomenfoot lose all of his magic? Where is Bethany? And who's the annoying guy wearing the question mark mask and Sherlock Holmes hat, taunting Owen and Kiel that Bethany is in grave danger?

Bethany is trapped in a hidden room that's slowly filling with water, and she can't escape until her friends find her. But is she imprisoned by more than just chains and a locked door? What's she hiding from Owen and Kiel?

Maybe some mysteries just shouldn't be solved.

Please note: The black bars in the first nine chapters are intended.

But the ending is great, totally worth hanging in there for
3.5 out of 3.5 stars. I loved the first book ''. This one was a bit harder to break into. My eleven year old. I lost interest a few times because it takes a little while to come together the story. But the ending is great, for sure worth hanging out there. I look forward to the next one really!
Just as good as the first!
This book has been loved! Just as good as the first. Lots of turns and twists. I teach high school and am always looking for great literature and I love all the books by James Riley. I recommend for the fourth grade up to sixth. Advanced third graders could also do it.
   My granddaughter LOVES this series!!
I bought this book for my granddaughter, as well as others in this series. She LOVES it! The series retains her interest and is eager to read another. There is nothing better than being a teacher myself! The book arrived in excellent condition and was delivered quickly. I '' said :
Great book for your Harry Potter and Keepers of the Lost Cities fan
My 12 year old devours Harry Potter and keeper of the Lost Cities books, so I was looking for something else to get into. I bought three and finished them in two days. She asks for the remainder in the series. Likewise, if your child likes these books, check out the Keepers of Lost Cities.
   Creative and engaging!
The characters Owen, Kiel and Bethany are complex, but extremely relatable to my children, who range from 8-11! I have found that this series sparks a lot of conversations in general about a wide variety of topics raised by characters decisions within the book! Plus, it is a fun read!
   Second books are series clinchers.
And then comes a second sequel and drains your enthusiasm. I think I am talking about the Stolen chapters? Don 't be ridiculous. This story is the second kind of the other book. The kind that pricks you on the head and coos that your instincts were right there with you all along. And here are some slippers and a blanket because you're gonna get cozy for a long time in this world.

It would never read correctly a lot of the sentences were blacked out throughout the book, so we were unable to download it.

He purchased Book #1 from Scholastic at the beginning of the 4th grade and was hooked. Recently, we added books 2 and 3 to his collection. A.R. : This series rated this series at an average of 5.0. My son loved the other references to small book series '', like Harry Potter, that are sprayed there.
