The Story of Art, one of the most famous and popular books on art ever written, has been a world bestseller for over four decades. Attracted by the simplicity and clarity of his writing, readers of all ages and backgrounds have found in Professor Gombrich a true master, and one who combines knowledge and wisdom with a unique gift for communicating his deep love of the subject.
For the first time in many years the book has been completely redesigned. The illustrations, now in color throughout, have all been improved and reoriginated, and include six fold‐outs. The text has been revised and updated where appropriate, and a number of significant new artists have been incorporated. The bibliographies have been expanded and updated, and the maps and charts redrawn.
The Story of Art has always been admired for two key qualities: it is a pleasure to read and a pleasure to handle. In these respects the new edition is true to its much‐loved predecessors: the text runs as smoothly as ever and the improved illustrations are always on the page where the reader needs them. In its new edition, this classic work continues its triumphant progress tirelessly for yet another generation, to remain the title of first choice for any newcomer to art or the connoisseur.
It takes about 11 Hours and 22 minutes on average for a reader to read The Story Of Art. This is based on the average reading speed of 250 Words per minute.
The Story Of Art is 546 pages long.
If you only have one book on art, this is the one you should have.

If you ever wanted to take a course in art history without sitting in a classroom, this book is for you. The illustrations of the art are wonderful and some fold out so that you can see the details of the work. It's a big book, so I'm going through it bit by bit.

Inspiring and insightful

FIRST LINE REVIEW There is really no such thing as art. Seriously, this is the perfect book for someone new to art history or for someone who wants a quick, though thorough refresher course, like me. I highly recommend that if you are drawn to this, read the most recent edition because it is more expansive and the photos are all in color!

Cigarette smoke saturated
Derived From Web , Aug 15, 2020
I rate the condition of this book and not the content. I bought only books that are advertised as Very Good Condition or better, and I have never had a problem with the condition of a book in the past. This book was saturated with cigarette smoke completely. I tried several methods over a period of a few months to get the book out, but none have been successful. I have not been able to read much of it at all because I can not bear the stale smoke smell. I believe that the condition of this book was grossly misrepresented. I am very disappointed with this book seller ''.

GOOD CONDITION GREAT BOOK

Beautifully written, full color pictures. I first read A Little History of the World and was so swept away that I had to order another Gombrich masterpiece. He made a textbook that read like a novel and I recommend it to all!

A great place to start, and a great place to revisit.
Derived From Web , Apr 24, 2019
The title says all this is a story of western art through the eyes of a man. It does not claim to be precise and its smaller size precludes large reproductions but all images are in color and are sharp. It was written more than 70 years ago in a style more relaxed and personal than more modern texts. Of course, some of its scholarship is obsolete, but can not be beat as an introduction. To the more experienced amateur, it is a calm conversation, a revisitation of the past with another fan.

Fantastic book; I just wish it was available in Kindle format
Derived From Web , Feb 23, 2019
This was my Art History Book in College and IMHO is the Best Single-volume Art History book available. The only reason it lands 4-stars and not 5 is that the newer editions of STILL are not available for the Kindle.

I love all his books
Derived From Web , Aug 6, 2017
All his books feel to me like friends, I am always sad about ending. A very thorough and sweet review of the history of art for beginners and everyone else, and for all ages. He does not tell the history, but rather the story of the evolution of art, but makes it short enough that it never gets boring. The relevant and high-quality colored images are particularly helpful and makes the book even more enjoyable.
