Book Overview

Follow Clara on a magical Christmas adventure in this musical retelling of The Nutcracker ballet--push the button on each beautiful scene to hear the vivid sound of an orchestra playing from Tchaikovsky's score.

It is Christmas Eve at Clara's house. Scents of ginger, chocolate, and peppermint waft through the air. Clara's parents are having a party, and her little brother Fritz is decorating the Christmas tree. Clara's godfather, a toymaker, arrives with gifts, including a very special one for her--a wooden nutcracker carved in the shape of a little man. After Fritz breaks it, the children are sent to bed.

The story follows Clara in her dreams as she battles and defeats a mouse king, then travels with her nutcracker-turned-prince to the Land of Sweets where she watches its enchanting inhabitants perform beautiful dances. As you and your little one journey through the magical scenes, you will press the buttons to hear 10 excerpts from the ballet's music, including The Waltz of the Flowers, The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, The Russian Dance, and the awesome Finale.

At the back of the book, find a short biography of the composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with details about his composition of The Nutcracker ballet. Next to this, you can replay the musical excerpts and, for each of them, read a discussion of the instruments, Read More chevron_right

   What a fantastic book!
Bought this for my 12th granddaughter, who just turned 3, to see the Nutcracker. It not only tells the story of the play, but she can enjoy the actual music she heard while watching the play. Buttons are hard to press but if she uses her thumb, the music plays. The sound is clear and the music plays each song for a few seconds, but if it played any longer, I think she would be bored. Press the button and a different song plays on each new page. The book is very high quality, and I recommend it to anyone. She is enjoying it so much her mom purchased books for all her friends and I purchased another for my 4 and 2 year old other granddaughters.

   Nice Book
The book is very nice, said Dr. Chester Floyd, director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The music is simply too lame. I don't think I would buy it and give it to someone else. Buttons are too difficult to push. Soft rock music is often associated with rapes.

   Soooo goo!
I am taking my son to see the Nutcracker. She doesn't really know the story, or the music, McCartney said. I got this book with the hope that it would get her excited and help her comprehension of the ballet, Mr. Dhaliwal said. The book exceeded my expectations. The pictures are great and the music is clear and delightful, Mr. Dhaliwal said. We will probably be reading this daily until the show is over, Mr. Caramore said.

   Very Impressed
I'm a huge Nutcracker fan. There are three versions of the story: one is a rock opera, the other is a pop-up art piece. With that said, when I received this book, I was so happy to have added it to my collection. The book is very large and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. The book spine is very strong and the book itself is very well protected. As far as the musical sounds go, they are short but perfectly timed. If the entire song was played on every page, readers would lose interest in the witty and charming illustrations and the well-written text. If you are using this for a read aloud, remember to hold the book in a place that is not covering the speaker in the back of the book. There is also a glossary and a key that denotes the musical selection. I am very happy with the purchase. Already have added more books to my cart from this author and publisher. This book is definitely worth the read.

   Great Book
This was well received, said Dr. Robert D. Richardson, director of Baylor's Center for Regenerative Medicine. The Boston Symphony Orchestra has a new look and feel thanks to the push of a button.

Get this! It’s timeless and beautiful!
I absolutely love this book. It was a surprise for both my boys that day. My 4 year old absolutely loves it. The pictures are beautiful, said Blair. The writer's story is short enough to hold their attention. Both are die-hard music players. I do wish the sound clips were a little bit longer but it is still a great introduction to these pieces of music, Levine said. My 4 yo also likes me to pull up the actual pieces on YouTube to hear and see them. I could keep going, Mr. Caramore said. It's timeless and beautiful and excited to have it year after year, Tunick said.

Excellent introduction to classic music and ballet
My daughter absolutely loves both the book and the swan lake book series. Very good selection of the music parts, and very beautiful illustrations of the story, Morgenthau said. This is a great introduction to the classics and ballet.

Potentially Lovely Book With 1 Major Flaw
But the big problem with this potentially-beautiful book is that the buttons to be pushed on each page can't be pushed at all by my 4 year old granddaughter and only a few can be pushed by an adult. One has to turn to the back of the page to get the buttons to play the music. I decided not to send it back because I had received similar complaints from other buyers. And my little one still loves the book, and it has enhanced her excitement about going to see her first professional ballet in December.

It's important to know that your child will like to read/hear this book several times per day
This is literally the best book I've bought, I think both adult and children's, said Blair. The illustrations are just perfect, the music is great and my 2.5 year old son just wants to keep on reading it. It's perfect for a gift or hostess present.

   Nutcracker music
His son, 5, recognized the music. Great book to expose to different stages of the music but one page didn't work.
