Conveys good lessons, but is not preachy

I wanted to make sure this book was appropriate for 6th graders, and I think it's very appropriate for this age group, too, said Kirk. The book is well-written and deals with the confusing feelings most young people have about friendships that wax and wane. It's told in the first person by a young lady who's a bit nerdy and not in sync with her classmates, but this makes it all the more spot-on, Morgenthau said. Besides, it is jam-packed with fun facts about jellyfish. Though it can be times painful in that pre-teen way, I think that it doesn't dwell in the pain. It's so easy to write them as two-dimensional characters, but these aren't too narrow, Sosa said. It was passed on to my daughter, who teaches sixth grade, and she told her it was a keeper.

Great Middle School Read

My own tears snuck up on me near the end of Suzy's journey through grief, friendship, and seventh-grade math. Only a handful of books in the "Divergent" series deal with real issues that teens can relate to without patronizing its adolescent audience. The fact is, the jelly fish was created by accident. I highly recommend this book to high school students and beyond.

Really enjoyed the book. Zu is an extremely well-written book. She's logical, sensitive, and unfortunately misunderstood, Raymond said. It doesn't shy away from difficult moments or complicated feelings either. The first person narrative adds to the depth of Suzy's grief and brings to mind the anguish felt by her family members. As I began to see this young girl process complex emotions, I felt like I was witnessing real time. I sometimes disagreed with her actions, but I understood her intentions and wanted the girls at school, Franny, anyone to understand. Ali trusts children to be able to read about death or grief, which is why I feel the book works so well. It's honest and beautifully written, Witt said.

Didn't expect to cry like a baby

It was a book I found while on a kick learning about jellyfish. It didn't bother me that this book is fictional, or that it really isn't that much about jellyfish, or even whether they eat your skin. It's a delightfully quick, science-tinged read for an adult. It brought me, unwittingly, straight back to my pre-teen mind, which apparently is still locked away in my psyche and retrievable with the proper literary coaxing. If you were ever embarrassed or socially awkward as a kid, or if you remember what it's like to have epic feuds or confusing falling-out with friends and former friends, you might find unsettlingly powerful buried emotions surfacing.

Trying to make sense of the world

In this tragic story, a seventh-grade girl must come to terms with the death of her best friend. And she also doesn't fit in well with the average seventh-grade girl. She fixes her idea that will resolve her mixed feelings and sadness. The author of the book, Pauley, writes with compassion and understanding. There are the classic mean kids, but also some smart and supportive adults, Raymond said. Things go wrong, but Suzy moves on. He also praised Pauley Kilpatrick's book, "A Wonderful Book."

I'm a huge fan of YA books. This one is without a doubt the best. I also enjoyed learning about jellyfish through Suzy's interest in science. We should all be lucky enough to have a spunky and passionate middle school science teacher who “gets us†and let’s us eat lunch in her room rather than die of loneliness surrounded by other adolescents, Hollingworth said.

GREAT BOOK... not great ending.

Yes, I did cry more than once through the book, but that is a sign that it is well written. It was very interesting and both of us, Meagan and my best friend, read it in 4 days because it pulled us in! Only because of the ending did I give this 4 stars instead of 5. Although I do recognize why she ended the book in that certain way it was a little annoying that the question was never really answered.
