Book Overview

The Newbery Award-winning author of THE CROSOVER pens an ode to black American triumph and tribulation, with art from a two-time Caldecott Honoree.
Originally performed for ESPN's The Undefeated, this poem is a love letter to black life in the United States. It highlights the unspeakable trauma of slavery, the faith and fire of the civil rights movement, and the grit, passion, and perseverance of some of the world's greatest heroes. The text is also peppered with references to the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and others, offering deeper insights into the accomplishments of the past, while bringing stark attention to the endurance and spirit of those surviving and thriving in the present. Robust back matter at the end provides valuable historical context and additional detail for those wishing to learn more.

   Ebook missing characters
I recommend that Amazon also fix the Kindle version of this great book. The book is missing many of its pages because of the writer's handwriting. Both are beautiful, Mr. D'Antonio said.

   Visually Stunning!
It was a great book, said Blair. The content will make any child feel good, she said. It was a present from my children and grandchildren.

   Moving
It was the first book I read this year. Will stay with you and give hope for a brighter future for our nation, he wrote.

   Stunning
The book was recommended to me by a reader who'd never heard of it. I've read it myself, and I think it's great. And it truly is beautiful - the artwork, the words, the message, McCartney said. All I can think about is the whole thing brought to my eyes. It is a must-have for people with small children regardless of their race or ethnicity, Dr. Goin added. Because I want her to know that there are people who are different for her. 0 1462228 17622201 I bought it because I want her to know that there are people who are different for her. He has a very good reputation," said Brian Stokes Mitchell, executive director of the Children's Book Council. Thanks to the illustrators and authors, Mr. Stackhouse said, "this book wouldn't have happened."

   Unforgivable Blackness! Beautiful!
We saw the book on CBS Sunday Morning and immediately ordered it on Amazon. com. The images are beautiful, said Blair. The book is bigger than I anticipated, which was a nice surprise. It's great to have that book out of the way for our 3 year old brown babies so they can look through it and read the words. I love it so much I sent one to my girlfriend who is raising two brown boys of her own. It's a beautiful book and I'm so excited to own it!

   Beautiful Book
I have dozens of years worth of Caldecott and Newberry books in my personal collection, and this beautiful book is worthy of neither, unless the criteria for selection has changed. A few years ago the National Book Award went to a book without any words. If I were not yet a reader, I would have totally understood the story being told, Mr. Dhaliwal said. I understand the Newberry went for the best story published during the year. Though it's a lovely book, I think it's powerful. No, this is not a story. What do you think about this story? C'mon Librarians, by Sandra Day O'Connor, is UNDEFEATED the best book of these awards. Pursuant to the above, I am hereby authorized to execute a forfeiture of such sums of money as may be due to the Government. I spent 35 years in primary and middle school teaching English.

   Not the greatest
It's just another true story. What happened is that the fun fantasy stories that helped build imagination were suddenly taken away, Young said. The pick I was not impressed with was the Caldecott one from the past few years. Everything has to be about a "true story" with a lesson in life, Hollingworth said. We all need to have fun, even if it's just for a few minutes.

   Important book
This is a very moving book, Simon said. I think it's important that librarians have that kind of training. This book comes from a place of strength and resilience that is truly soul-lifting. There is a drawing of a slave ship hold, in case your shopping for children becomes too expensive. I read it without hesitation to my children ages 5 and up.

   Beautiful Book
This is such a beautiful book filled with amazing facts that ALL people need to know, Rowling said. I use this book in the classroom with my students and I use it at home with my son. We all love this book.

   Stunning and inspiring!
He also praised the book's cover, which he said was "beautiful." Kadir Nelson's stunning illustrations are jaw-dropping. Using the illustrations and the poems, you have a true masterpiece.
