Book Overview

Chiaverini has once again written an intense and beautiful book-so much so that readers will almost hear the hollow echo of the fife and drum as they immerse themselves in every compelling page . . . Truly unforgettable.
-BookPage

In 1862, the men of Water's Ford, Pennsylvania, rally to President Lincoln's call while Dorothea Granger marshals her friends to wield their needles for the Union. Meanwhile, Anneke Bergstrom hides the shame she feels for her husband's pacifism; gifted writer Gerda Bergstrom takes on local Southern sympathizers in the pages of the Water's Ford Register; and Constance Wright struggles to help her husband gain entry to the Union Army-despite the color of his skin. As the women work, hope, and pray, the men they love confront loneliness, boredom, and danger on the battlefield. But the women of the sewing circle also forge a new independence that will forever alter the patchwork of life in the Elm Creek Valley.

A Civil War buff and passionate quilter
The book was everything I had expected and more. The way the men fought was added to my knowledge through the details of the war. I have read many historical Civil War stories by authors who have won awards for their research and this one was no different, except maybe more balanced between what happened on the battlefields and what happened at home. The characters are developed so well that they become real people. The books aren't written in chronological order, so it doesn't matter. I wanted to know Johanna's story, Gerta's story, Dorthea's story, Jonathan's story, and the others as well. I love all of her books, but I also like historical fiction the best, and she writes great historical fiction like Ann Rinaldi. The collection of historic fiction that you gave us will live in my heart forever.

... all the books thus far in this series and loved all but this one
I' ve read all of the books in the series so far and I loved all of them, but this one felt different. This book focused too much on the men fighting and not enough on the women at home, like her previous books did. I will continue to read her books despite the fact that they were disappointing.

   Fantastic Read
The story pulled me in. The part of the Civil War that I liked the most was the historical part. A wonderful tale!

Part of the Elm Creek Novels
I bought a quilt book inspired by this series. There is a glimpse of that time in our past.

This is a very boring book
The author of the elm creek quilt series has written many modern day books. She has turned them into history lessons and this one is worse than the others. It showed her knowledge of the Civil War period, but I found this book boring and had nothing to do with the series. I wouldn't recommend buying it if it wasn't a part of the series.

War damages all- soldier, family, and friend
The book gives insight into life as a Northern community. Team effort and suffering are taught. I appreciated the strength that comes from desire. " If life gives you lemons, make lemonade" is a quote that comes to mind.

   Well researched and thoughtful
As I have read each of the Elm Creek Quilts, I' ve become more fond of them. Her books are well written. Her characters come to life as real people.

Interesting history of Elm Creek quilters
The story about the origin of the Elm Creek Quilters made me more interested in the future stories about this organization. This isolated area of Pennsylvania reacted to the Civil War in a wonderful way thanks to the author.

It was great historically, but very little about the family which has been the base of her other books. Previously, the main topic was the family story. The family was taken aback by the amount of war information.
