Delicious . . . richly riveting . . . The Vacationers offers all the delights of a fluffy, read-it-with-sunglasses-on-the-beach read, made substantial by the exceptional wit, insight, intelligence and talents of its author.--People (four stars)
An irresistible, deftly observed novel from the New York Times-bestselling author of Modern Lovers-- about the secrets, joys, and jealousies that rise to the surface over the course of an American family's two-week stay in Mallorca. For the Posts, a two-week trip to the Balearic island of Mallorca with their extended family and friends is a celebration: Franny and Jim are observing their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary, and their daughter, Sylvia, has graduated from high school. The sunlit island, its mountains and beaches, its tapas and tennis courts, also promise an escape from the tensions simmering at home in Manhattan. But all does not go according to plan: over the course of the vacation, secrets come to light, old and new humiliations are experienced, childhood rivalries resurface, and ancient wounds are exacerbated. This is a story of the sides of ourselves that we choose to show and those we try to conceal, of the ways we tear each other down and build each other up again, and the bonds that ultimately hold us together. With wry humor and tremendous heart, Emma Straub delivers a richly satisfying story of a family in the midst of a maelstrom of change, emerging irrevocably altered yet whole. It takes about 4 Hours and 7 minutes on average for a reader to read The Vacationers. This is based on the average reading speed of 250 Words per minute.
The Vacationers is 320 pages long.
Boring as a real family vacation
Derived From Web , Feb 14, 2022
It was very dull. Picked up The Vacationers because of all the hype. This book was recommended to me many times while I was on Amazon. It was boring like a real life vacation with my parents. Jim and Franny want to go to Mallorca with their two children, Bobby and Sylvia, and Franny's best gay couple, Lawrence and Charles. Some of the reviews make it sound like there are some great, deep- dark secrets that come out during this vacation, but not much actually happens. Wouldn't it be crazy if Bobby and Charles were gay? Franny and Charles had an affair when they were younger and had a baby they gave up for adoption. Anything is acceptable. Something more interesting was written about.

Vacation books are the best reads for summer and the beach
Derived From Web , Feb 14, 2022
The best books to read in the summer are vacation books. The Post family vacation with their two adult children, their son's much older girlfriend, the wife's' male best friend and his husband, takes place over a two week period. As the author moves from character to character, the back story comes out in flashes. If the reader is paying attention, there were no great surprises or revelations in The Vacationers. Mallorca, Spain gives a glamorous feel to the book. I found myself writing down a few of the thoughts that were highlighted on the screen. I found the characters in this book to be easy to read, and I think I will remember this book a few years down the road. It's likely not. I thoroughly enjoyed it and devoured it within 3 days.

ULTIMATELY DISAPPOINTING
Derived From Web , Feb 14, 2022
The book began with a loud bang. Characters are carefully delineated, not out of place. The problem is interesting. Would the wife forgive her husband, who cheated on her with a young girl, on a family vacation in Mallorca? The family and relationships were mapped out beautifully. Around the middle of the book things started to sound different. Things got tied up neat and tidy, instead of probing deeper into the dark pitfalls that all families and especially dysfunctional ones fall into. A quick read, and one for the beach. I was hoping for more, but I'm disappointed. Laurie Colwin had been compared to the writer.

Good summer read just not a great one
Derived From Web , Feb 14, 2022
This is the first novel I' ve read by Emma Straub and I'm not sure if I enjoyed it or not. It was a good summer read, but felt that the plot and characters did not develop much from beginning to end. After letting it open in the glass for a little while, it doesn't really open and be impressive. It would have been a better read if the plot was to mature a bit more.

Delightful! Loved this book. A real treat!
Derived From Web , Nov 22, 2020
The book is delightful and I loved it. Emma Straub is a great writer who can capture the essence of individual human beings. The good, the bad and the quirky. I liked the characters even though they were flawed. There are several laugh out loud moments in this book. It was a bonus that it took place in Mallorca. I bought another one of her books after completing this book.

Heartwarming family tale
Derived From Web , Mar 25, 2019
An unusual extended family takes a two- week vacation on the beautiful Spanish island of Mallorca. Will the house with its nice views be large enough for the family to live in? The characters are flawed and funny. Sylvia, the youngest of them, is getting ready to go to college. The resolution of her parents' difficulty was a bit too pat, but overall it was a charming and satisfying read.
