The Vortex: A True Story Of History's Deadliest Storm, An Unspeakable War, And Liberation is 464 pages long.
Scott Carney delivers again!
Derived From Web , Mar 30, 2022
Amazingly written, so much more than a political storm and a deadly strife. I have read other works by Carney, What Doesn t Kill Us, and The Wedge, both of which must read, so I figured I couldn t go wrong with The Vortex. Plus, I had never heard anything about the Great Bhola cyclone. And I can 't think of anyone else, I would rather learn about an extreme weather event that happened in a distant land over 50 years ago than Scott Carney. I felt like I knew the lives of those written. Carney has a way of bringing history and geography and making it alive through narrative and culture. So vivid! '' Reading his descriptions of the region made me feel like I was actually walking the streets of Dacca Bazaar, being aflighted by the wind on Manpura Island, having a glass of whiskey with Yahya and Nixon and feeling Candy's kindness. I give The Vortex the highest recommendation : you won 't be disappointed!

Fantastic book

Reads like a novel but teaches you about climate, politics, human rights and Bangladesh. The section on the George Harrison concert is very sad.

Incredible Story
Derived From Web , Mar 29, 2022
What an incredible book! I have read most of Scott Carney's books ; this is by far the best. What I like most about the book is the way Scott and Jason use personal accounts of people who have lived through this unimaginable tragedy. The book is very well researched with a ton of information added behind the scenes, which adds to the story. Though this story happened over 50 years ago, there are many parallels to current events, especially the Ukraine - war and horrific weather events related to climate change. Growing up, everything I knew about Bangeladesh was connected with the concert for Bangeladesh at the Madison Square Garden. This book fills in a lot of gaps, especially the US role in the region and the actions of then President Nixon and Secretary of State Kissinger. This was a totally fasinating read from start to finish and I would highly recommend it, 5 stars...

Riveting story--informative and fun to read
Derived From Web , Mar 29, 2022
This is a beautiful read about South Asia, climate change, democracy and human survival. Though it has dealt with lots of heavy issues, the author's voice keeps your attention. If you want to learn something new and have a good time doing it, give this a read!

A Compelling Story, You Won’t Want to Put Down
Derived From Web , Mar 29, 2022
What drew me to this book was to get some idea of how climate change might affect us in broader ways other than weather. A story is woven through the lives and experiences of people who lived through this immense tragedy. I was drawn in a way that felt intimate and alive into their lives. I felt connected and cared for the likes of Hai, Hafiz and Candy. I cheered them and cried for their losses. It was hard to put this one down yet, since the chapters are not long, I could sneak one in with morning coffee or taking an afternoon break. Get this one and enjoy.
