An exceptionally moving story of triumph against all odds set during World War I, from the acclaimed author of Fighting Words, and for fans of Fish in a Tree and Number the Stars.
Ten-year-old Ada has never left her one-room apartment. Her mother is too humiliated by Ada's twisted foot to let her outside. So when her little brother Jamie is shipped out of London to escape the war, Ada doesn't waste a minute--she sneaks out to join him. So begins a new adventure for Ada, and for Susan Smith, the woman who is forced to take the two kids in. As Ada teaches herself to ride a pony, learns to read, and watches for German spies, she begins to trust Susan--and Susan begins to love Ada and Jamie. But in the end, will their bond be enough to hold them together through wartime? Or will Ada and her brother fall back into the cruel hands of their mother? This masterful work of historical fiction is equal parts adventure and a moving tale of family and identity--a classic in the making. Awesome

What a great book! I will not say that it is a great tale of growing up, learning life lessons and saving the lives of every character in the book because many of the other reviewers have detailed the story. Mam got what she wanted in the end, so you could include her in that! It is a great tale for any age reader. I will recommend it to my friends and teachers. Ms Bradley did an awesome job.

Subject matter and writer’s craft don’t match
Derived From Web , Mar 16, 2022
Where to start. I was surprised by the rave reviews. First of all, there's an agenda. Have no doubt about it. The abuse that she was subjected to was horrifying. I don't agree with it being told so graphically in a book for children. It isn't told in a way to help someone through it. The sentence structure and vocabulary make it a book with a low reading level but the subject matter is much higher. The writing was dull and uninteresting. I pre-read it for lack of anything else to grab while on vacation, but I bought it for my fifth graders to read after reading so many great reviews. I won't be giving it to her. A place to hang the moon is a more enjoyable book to read.

A homerun.

I would recommend this book to all ages. The characters are well developed and set in the historic war years that gives the reader an insight into how the English villagers dealt with the challenges. The three main characters overcame the emotional scars of their past and developed a solid sure love.

The book that changed my life
Derived From Web , Mar 17, 2020
Wow. This is a wonderful book for children. Some of the content is heavy for older elementary school and middle school. I laugh and cry at different points of the story as an adult. The theme of kindness and how it can change lives was something I loved. The mother in this story is nasty, but she can come in many forms. The characters are great. The setting is nice. Nice read. It is highly recommended. Content Ada, the main character, is abused severely. The author handled it well. There is a language clean religious no. The kids go to church in some areas. This is not a religious event. Happy reading. It is!

Beautifully written
Derived From Web , Oct 18, 2019
Bradley captures the voice of a 10 year old girl who is caught between her mother and guardian. When London's children are sent to the country to avoid Hitler's bombs, they escape from a stern and unloving mother who was raised in poverty. When Susan Smith reluctantly takes them in, the children still feel unwanted, even though they discover a new and surprising world in their new home. As the war-time pressures increase and they explore life beyond the slums of London, they can't help but wonder if Mam really wants her to. Bradley captures Ada's emotions with great accuracy and quickly shows you how much she means to her.

Leave it out

During the time of WW 2, this was a great story about a young girl. It's written for kids in elementary and middle school. It was a gift for my granddaughter and I read it before giving it to her. The book has hints of homosexuality, which is disappointing to me. It wasn't needed for the story line. I wouldn't give it a good rating and I'm not giving it to my granddaughter because of that.
