Book Overview

Based on supermodel Georgie Badiel's childhood, a young girl dreams of bringing clean drinking water to her African village

With its wide sky and warm earth, Princess Gie Gie's kingdom is a beautiful land. But clean drinking water is scarce in her small African village. And try as she might, Gie Gie cannot bring the water closer; she cannot make it run clearer. Every morning, she rises before the sun to make the long journey to the well. Instead of a crown, she wears a heavy pot on her head to collect the water. After the voyage home, after boiling the water to drink and clean with, Gie Gie thinks of the trip that tomorrow will bring. And she dreams. She dreams of a day when her village will have cool, crystal-clear water of its own.

Inspired by the childhood of African-born model Georgie Badiel, acclaimed author Susan Verde and award-winning author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds have come together to tell this moving story. As a child in Burkina Faso, Georgie and the other girls in her village had to walk for miles each day to collect water. This vibrant, engaging picture book sheds light on this struggle that continues all over the world today, instilling hope for a future when all children will have access to clean drinking water.

   She Loves It.
My 6 year old granddaughter absolutely loves it. After I read it to her twice she asked so many questions about why they didn't have the facilities to obtain water. She's carrying it around with her since she got it, Mr. Dhaliwal said. This is the first book I've connected with her. I'm so glad I purchased it.

Good introduction to how hard it is for many people to get clean water.
This book was a great addition to the A Clean Drink of Water series. While the illustrations make this book seem like fiction, the story is told with a certain degree of realism. Many people, even in developing countries, have to go a long distance to get clean water. Really good story. It's great to see such a developed character. What's more, the kids are talking about it.

   Gratitude at its finest.
Such a different book gives a short glimpse into a great culture, where each day is focused on obtaining clean water. A perfect Thanksgiving book for children to appreciate all the things they have to understand while staying in a positive tone.

   This is Real
That is the conversation I had with my children, who turn the sink or filtered water in the door of the fridge when they are thirsty. My kids have never been concerned in their lives for a day about access to clean water. I've always admired a book that draws children into very real issues in the world.

   This is Real
That's the conversation I had with my kids, who turn on the sink or the filtered water in the door of the fridge when they are thirsty. My kids have never, not one day in their lives, worried about access to clean water. I'm delighted the book draws children into very real issues in the world.
