Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Announcing the completely revised and updated edition of The Wine Bible, the perennial bestseller with over 550,000 copies in print, and praised as The most informative and entertaining book I ve ever seen on the subject (Danny Meyer), A guide that has all the answers (Bobby Flay), and, simply, Astounding (Thomas Keller). A lively course from an expert teacher, The Wine Bible grounds the reader deeply in the fundamentals while layering on informative asides, tips, amusing anecdotes, definitions, glossaries, photos (all new for this edition), maps, labels, and recommended bottles. Karen MacNeil s information comes directly through primary research; for this second edition she has tasted more than 10,000 wines and visited dozens of wine regions around the world. New to the book are wines of China, Japan, Mexico, and Slovenia. And through it all the reader becomes ever more informed: How to taste with focus and build a wine-tasting memory. Understand the subtle interplay of variety, vineyard, and vintner. What makes a great wine great? How oak affects flavor. The reason behind Champagne s bubbles. And, because of the author s unique voice, always entertained: In great years Petrus is ravishing, elegant, and rich Ingrid Bergman in red satin. Or, describing a Riesling: A laser beam. A sheet of ice. A great crackling bolt of lightning. Since the original publication of The Wine Bible, Karen MacNeil s authority and insight have only grown, making her the perfect expert to teach anyone novice to oenophile something new, unexpected, and important about wine.

Beginners sound fancy with "wine" talk
This is a great book if you are just starting out to learn about wines, I bought it because I was taking a wine course, said Christina. It reads well where you don't feel like you are reading a boring textbook. That was big. The ones that are most popular are those that are fireproof. It brings you in first, asking what is a good wine? It goes through the process of winemaking by making wine about the soil, then storing it in oak barrels for longer periods to create the different flavours. It also talks about the grapes that make the wine and how that gives it its unique character. The new system gives you wine terms not only in English but also in other languages. Yes, you can sound fancy when speaking with others. Buy it, says one man.

Knowledge up front, long finish of enjoyable information.
I'm not all the way through, but Ms. MacNeil's book lays out many essential facts that help me in my job, selling wine in a shop. My interest in wine is actually similar to consumers, he said. I want to try many different styles of wines, he said. She discusses terroir, tradition, new techniques, the science, the customs, food, visiting and wineries of note. I would say that in the year 2015, this book could use an update. Even if one is unfamiliar with one or two countries, I recommend this book. Karen goes all over Europe, the Americas and Australia, the vast bulk of the world's fine wines.

   extremely comprehensive
If you have any interest in wine, this book is amazing. The book opens with how they make wine, how to taste it, all of the grape varietals, etc. What a difference a week makes, Frey said. Though I'm still working my way through the book, I've read the entire Burgundy, Rhone, and Champagne section. They are all extremely insightful, providing information on what grapes are grown there, why they are grown there, and finally, one of the most interesting sections, the recommended wines to try.

Great book about wine, especially California wine
It is very down-to-earth and friendly, written by an author who is very knowledgable about her subject and who has obviously enjoyed her work, Simon says. You learn a lot about viticulture and tasting in this book, which equips you to learn more about European wines from other sources, recommended by Wine Spectator.

Must have for those interested in exploring wine.
Very nicely written, very thorough, very approachable and usable information for anyone interested in exploring wine beyond those few that you've had in the past and know you like, said James. I used this in conjunction with a WSET Level II class and while it was more than I needed at that level it was a great guide and reference.

   Fast and Great Looking book
The book arrived very quickly, said Dr. Julie Gerberding, who co-chaired the inquiry. There is light wear to the book, but it is barely noticeable. The book is in great condition, the buyer said. Very good book, very well-written.

   Very good wine book!
This is a great review of all the great wines. I use this as a reference for students who want the taste of wine experience and not just chemistry.
