Wonderfully wide-ranging and enjoyable, this outstanding collection features short stories by great 19- and 20th-century writers from America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Western Europe.
Included are Hemingway's A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, in which two waiters and a lonely customer in a Spanish cafe confront the concept of nothingness; A & P, John Updike's most anthologized story and one of his most popular; Borges and I, typical Jorge Luis Borges -- imaginative, philosophical, and mysterious; as well as short masterpieces by Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, Herman Melville, Thomas Mann, Guy de Maupassant, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, D. H. Lawrence, and ten other great writers.
Prime examples of the classic short story, these enduring literary treasures will be invaluable to students and teachers as well as to anyone who appreciates the finely turned tale.

There are a few stand-out gems in this one - The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins and The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket by Yasunari Kawabata. Five stars? Well, first of all, there is no such thing as a "science fiction" story. There is a good sampling of authors here, with authors chosen from many countries.

Many worthwhile selections, try it.

This is not a collection of short stories, but rather a collection of essays by some of the world's great writers. If you enjoy this literary form you're more than likely to read many of these. Note the subheading of this terrible parable in the "Great Gatsby" series, "The Last Days of the Republic." Sit back and enjoy!

Behold the Best
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
The quality of the stories selected for this work is very high, he said. Short stories are ubiqitous enough, but a superior collection like this is rare, indeed. The strengths of each author stand out. Each book opens with a new world for the reader to walk through. The contest between the Captain and the Prussian soldier is exciting and grotesque, even if the latter is a French captain. Is it just us? Does Kafka's artist hunger for sympathy or revulsion in the reader? We're secretly happy to see him die, Mr. Caramore said. Do we not get what we deserve, when we read The Necklace? For me, The World's Greatest Short Stories is not one of them.

Always love the art of the short story.
Derived From Web , Jul 21, 2021
This is the second time I've read this collection of short stories written by many authors from around the world from the second half of the 20th century to the first half of the 21st century. Because of the scandal, Micron is seeking an injunction to halt the sale of certain products. Because I have always loved short stories and I don't have to read the entire book, I can pick and choose the ones I want to read again.

Great selection of short stories, and the formatting is just fine
Derived From Web , Sep 22, 2020
Has some well-known great short stories by Hemingway, Hawthorne, and Tolstoy, plus some writers I've never read before. 20 stories, all built around a dirt cheap price. Don't be put off by complaints about the printing the text is large enough for this 60-year-old's eyes, and so what if the white margins aren't terribly huge? Pauley, 5, said he was "100 percent behind George Bush" when the Iraqi dictator was president.
