Even though it is over 20 years old, it is still an essential book for introductory learning or teaching

I used it to teach a comparative religion course for 12 th graders. It is comprehensive and covers all the basics of each religion. It avoids a lot of the political correctness that creeps into teaching, because it is a bit older than many newer texts. It doesn't suffer from the distortions that emerge in response to more militant religious zealots. I kept this book for my own use in the future, but I am not teaching now. This is the best book to introduce all religions, in my opinion.

Valuable Book
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
Very well written. There's a lot of valuable information here, but Smith sometimes emphasizes on imagery when detailing the history of a religion. I don't think this is a good idea for anyone looking for truth. It seems more suited for those who want to know more about any of the religions contained in the writing. I don't think this is a good book for building an apologist or learning to defend their own beliefs.

Would highly recommend this book as a simple reference source.

The basic belief systems of religions from around the world are explained by Huston Smith. The author uses a straightforward, factual style to describe each religion, and so, this book can be used as a reference source guide-- just put it on the bookshelf next to your dictionary. I bought the first edition of the book for my husband, who used it to choose a religion for himself. From reading this book, it's clear that the only purpose of Huston Smith is to create better understanding for his reader of different faiths.

Great book for in depth analysis of world religions
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
The book is great. Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and other religions are covered in the book. In depth analysis of the development of the religion, as well as why some particular beliefs came to be, is one of the topics covered. If you are interested in learning more about other religions, I would recommend taking a world religions course.

The world's religions are being broken down by Huston Smith. I could not put the book down because I was learning about the eastern religions. If you' re interested in learning about other cultures and their beliefs, this is the title for you.

I have the book before I take a college class. I read it and will read it again. I have it as an ebook, audiobook and speedreading program that I can use to read it at least 150+ wpm, or 3. 10,000 words per day. The book is very educational. It has helped many students become open- minded and eager to learn about not only world religions, but customs, traditions, and different aspects of life, from many different points of view. It helps readers become more educated on diversity. It is a must read for all students.
