I picked this book club pick for the month of September. I had high hope for this novel considering that it was voted for. The book ended up being completely predictable with Andalas's character as the lead. The main character was quite arrogant and redundant with regards to being a firefighter, and I found this to be very offensive. The story of the love story that happened in the book is so obvious. The bad thing that happened to the lead character when she was a kid was obvious. I was highly disappointed in this book and knew that everyone voted incorrectly before I even opened it.

A treasure of a story

Retired fire captain and avid reader, Mr. Daschle said. This story was told with the compassion and humor that made it all the way to the Supreme Court. I'll be reading more of Elizabeth Center's work. She is a master storyteller and gifted writer. She took the reader behind the doors of a firehouse and illustrated the challenges female firefighters face in being accepted in this male-dominated field. Along with these challenges, the protagonist's struggles with her estranged mother and her struggle with the forbidden attraction to another firefighter.

Jodi Picoult, the best-selling novelist, has admitted to reading the entire book. It looks like Amazon will let me return it. It's predictable and shallow, even for a Broadway revival. I like good lighting, but this is not it.

Hard to put down great read

A really enjoyable read, as all of this author's books are, and I highly recommend this newest one. It's the way she weaves a story with emotional literacy, with characters you are pulling for and while the characters face real and heart-breaking challenges, she writes with such empathy and warmth.

It's a 3 out of 5. In the beginning, it was an ok, casual book, but then it tackled some serious subjects, including infidelity, and then it devolved into clichés and melodrama at the end. Movie of the week, not serious writing.

Forgettable yet readable

I wanted to really, really like this book, but so much of it is unnecessary details about not important things, Claire writes. It was a lot of fun, I can't say I disliked it, but it fell short in many ways. If you like books to end with being everything tied up in a little bow then this is the book for you.
