Book Overview

Follow one day in the real lives of seven kids from around the world--Italy, Japan, Iran, India, Peru, Uganda, and Russia

In Japan, Kei plays Freeze Tag, while in Uganda, Daphine likes to jump rope. While the way they play may differ, the shared rhythm of their days--and this one world we all share--unites them.

This genuine exchange provides a window into traditions that may be different from our own as well as mirrors reflecting our common experiences. Inspired by his own travels, Matt Lamonthe transports readers across the globe and back with this luminous and thoughtful picture book.

   Wish families were more varied
This book has so many interesting elements and is a great concept but I wish there were more varied family structures. The emphasis is strongly focused on nuclear families with mothers and fathers and at least 2 children. No same sex parents, no only children, and I don 't think there are multigenerational households or single parents. Almost all families eat dinner together almost every night. I wanted to see children who eat with their aunts or older siblings, while their parents work or move between households. I wanted to see more about how family structures differ and children are raised by communities, not just a mother and a dad.

   Best book
One of the best books I have read to my children is one of the best books I have read to my children. Great way to learn about other countries'cultures. Great gift for kids, great gift for children.

   Poor layout
Such a shame! This book would be 5 stars if they had done a chapter for each family, but instead they chose to show every family at the same time. I knew it was coming in and thought it was a terrible idea, but hoped it wouldn't be that bad, but alas it is terrible. Kids zone out before you even get to the next page. The only way they stayed with it was when we skipped the book after the one family. If you can find a similar book that doesn't lump every child on the same page, then choose absolutely that one over this.

   A Great Family Book
Our six-year-old granddaughters really enjoy this book. We have reread it many times at their request. The illustrations and text contain interesting details about the daily lives of real children in different parts of the world.

   For a more inclusive world
Three of these for all kiddos in my life and for an expecting neighbor bought three of these. This book is just awesome! As half Iranian, I'm so excited that they will grow up with representation of their culture, while learning also about other cultures.

   AWESOME
My class of 3 and 4 yos ask every day about this book. Instead of reading it all page by page, we choose one of the 7 children in the book, follow their day and compare it to a typical day here in the USA. Awesome for recognizing likenesses and differences as well as expanding cultural competence.

Amazing book, great pictures/photos and stories!
I bought this book for my mother, a second teacher, and we both LOVE it! She always teaches a unit on how families live around the world and this was such a wonderful book to give her to add to her collection!

I wish the format of the book was different
This book is very different, beautiful pictures and I love that it shows different parts of life for 7 different children around the world. I was disappointed, however, by the book's format. I found it confusing that each page shows everything from all seven children's lives. All seven dresses they wear, all seven different meals they eat. I wouldn 't mind so much if the order shown on the page stayed at least the same throughout the book, but the order changed each time. I found it confusing to follow, so I doubt my children, who I was hoping to use the book as a teaching tool, will be able to follow very easily. I wish the book would travel at a childcountry just one time. I think it would be easier to compare and contrast this way ''.
