Book Overview

Only once did David Foster Wallace give a public talk on his views on life, during a commencement address given in 2005 at Kenyon College. The speech is reprinted for the first time in book form in THIS IS WATER. How does one keep from going through their comfortable, prosperous adult life unconsciously? How do we get ourselves out of the foreground of our thoughts and achieve compassion? The speech captures Wallace's electric intellect as well as his grace in attention to others. After his death, it became a treasured piece of writing reprinted in The Wall Street Journal and the London Times, commented on endlessly in blogs, and emailed from friend to friend.

Writing with his one-of-a-kind blend of causal humor, exacting intellect, and practical philosophy, David Foster Wallace probes the challenges of daily living and offers advice that renews us with every reading.

   One of Wallace's masterpieces
David Foster Wallace was a novelist, short story writer and essayist. This is fiction. The president of the university, Robert Hemenway, gave the speech to a graduating class. Only brilliant one paragraph per page, sometimes only a phrase, laid out rather like a poem, and reading almost like an incredible waterfall of wisdom. Only a handful of diamonds have been found and authenticated as genuine rubies. An immensely nourishing, uplifting, and full of insight, humor, and rich emotion memoir.

   I somehow missed this
It's ironic that I have never heard of David Foster Wallace before today and sort of highlights my own thought process, Savage said. He has more than nailed how we humans stumble our way through life without thinking about what to think. A passionate and witty writer, Kline also wrote "The Manchurian Candidate."

It's like reading a less funny "Deep Thoughts" collection
The whole thing is an attempt by the publisher to get some money off the death of David Foster Wallace, argues Carin Bullock, The New Republic's book critic. Each page of the book is very short and each word counts only a few. He compares it to reading a less-funny Deep Thoughts collection. Only the completists will be allowed to join the club.

Brilliantly observed. DFW's feelings of contempt for humanity
It made me go instantly to read other works he has written, it was a total compliment.

   This is magic.
I've read this book several times and I'm still not finished. A gift to the head, heart and imagination. Magic is what exists between what we see and what we feel to be true, Raymond said. This is magic, Mr. Kennedy said.

   Great Speech, Poor Format
I've always loved this speech and David Foster Wallace. But the publisher divided the speech into individual sentences and placed one on a page, making the speech less than readable.

   Insightful and Funny
His view of life and his understanding of what really matters make this a worthwhile read, even if limited to a few pages. Even better, when enjoyed while listening to his speech on YouTube.

   Not as great as advertised
This speech could be of interest and useful for people in the US, so steeped in propaganda from an early age, and of critical importance to bankers and other vermin, but outside that, little new is offered, it says.

This commencement speech really pulls my heartstrings and is a great reminder to be patient and kind to everyone I encounter in this life, he said. Three stars because the layout is so loose, it definitely takes away some of the power of the words because each page has only a few sentences and reads very choppy.
