Book Overview

For readers of Sean Carroll, Brian Greene, Katie Mack, and anyone who wants to know what theoretical physicists actually do.

This Way to the Universe is a celebration of the astounding, ongoing scientific investigations that have revealed the nature of reality at its smallest, at its largest, and at the scale of our daily lives. The enigmas that Professor Michael Dine discusses are like landmarks on a fantastic journey to the edge of the universe.

Asked where to find out about the Big Bang, Dark Matter, the Higgs boson particle--the long cutting edge of physics right now--Dine had no single book he could recommend. This is his accessible, authoritative, and up-to-date answer. Comprehensible to anyone with a high-school level education, with almost no equations, there is no better author to take you on this amazing odyssey.

Dine is widely recognized as having made profound contributions to our understanding of matter, time, the Big Bang, and even what might have come before it. This Way to the Universe touches on many emotional, critical points in his extraordinary carreer while presenting mind-bending physics like his answer to the Dark Matter and Dark Energy mysteries as well as the ideas that explain why our universe consists of something rather than nothing. People assume String Theory can never be tested, but Dine intrepidly explores exactly how the theory might be tested experimentally, as well as the pitfalls of falling in love with math. This book reflects a lifetime pursuing the deepest mysteries of reality, by one of the most humble and warmly engaging voices you will ever read.

Fascinating subject but hard to comprehend.
Suspect '' ; I'm just too science-dump to follow the author's explanations of how the physical world works.

   Fascinating and Readable
I am generally not a big fan of the lay person's big science books, but this one was really well done. No reason to be intimidated by what is, admittedly, a very difficult subject thanks to the work of the author.

A Great History of the Hidden Mysteries of the Universe
I have been interested in particle physics for a long time, but lacking education in this science, it is hard to visualize and retain the details of counterintuitive processes built on layers of accumulated knowledge. This provides a history of our exploration and understanding of this reality in a form that is much easier to follow and understand a better understanding.

A endless shootout to his peers
After the first hundred or so mentions of his peers and the work they have done, I gave up hoping to actually find any information. If your idea of information is to read endlessly that so and so and so and so and so and yet another so and so did this amazing thing that this book is for you. It reads like a tourist, highlighting all the fine people he met on his latest trip.

Perfect for anyone with no background in Physics and Math
This book was written for those with absolutely no physics and mathematics background. It skims quickly and lightly over the history and themes of physics without using any equations or other mathematics whatsoever. It is an easy, undemanding and pleasurable read for anyone interested in learning the ideas of modern physics for the first time.

   Physics for everyone
Curious about physics, but hate all math? Here is the same. This way to the universe provides a dense and diverse look at the subject, mostly written in plain English. However, don 't expect an easy read. I would describe it as a mountain read, the opposite of a light beach read. But if you learn your time, you can take a lot. If you are already interested in physics or just how the world works around you, give this way to the universe a try.

   A must-read
This entertaining and accessible book is like a conversation with a beloved professor. It provides an overview of the topics at the cutting edge of modern physics, such as the Big Bang, dark matter and the Higgs Boson. It is full of personal humor and gentle anecdotes that contextualize research, theories and discoveries. A must-read for anyone interested in the theme. NetGalley thanks me for the ARC I received.
