In this groundbreaking book, a leading clinical psychiatrist redefines how we think about and treat victims of trauma. A stunning achievement that remains a classic for our generation. (Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., author of The Body Keeps the Score).
Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war. Hailed by the New York Times as one of the most important psychiatry works to be published since Freud, Trauma and Recovery is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand how we heal and are healed. It takes about 7 Hours and 45 minutes on average for a reader to read Trauma And Recovery: The Aftermath Of Violence--From Domestic Abuse To Political Terror. This is based on the average reading speed of 250 Words per minute.

Still relevant and compelling, 20+ years after its original publication

This was a groundbreaking book in the 90s, and although the extant literature has expanded considerably since its publication, the books themselves have stood the test of time. It is my go-to for issues related to trauma, it is well organized, chapters are exceptionally well-conceptualized and well-written, and the text itself is well-supported by research findings. Absolutely amazing--I'll read it again and again, and often recommend it to those working with trauma as well as individuals who just want to understand the context in which they occur a little better.

A very nice text

I enjoyed reading this book, said Barbara Comstock, assistant professor of English at the University of Michigan. If you can engage the readers in the material without sacrificing accuracy of information, you can reach a much wider audience than you would with something super formal, Raymond said. This is one of the books I hang onto and read again.

Recommended for professionals or anyone who deals with trauma

History of the sport of basketball written by a great historian. It definitely is a in depth look at trauma and even gave me new ways to look at it with clients, Morgenthau said. It explains how it is easier to blame a victim because they ask you to do something where an offender asks you to say and do nothing. I highly recommend this program to anyone who works in the field of psychology.

It should be mandatory for high school students to take at least one course in reading. Gives a fascinating analysis of the root causes of various traumas and the politics involved with their recovery.

For survivors
Derived From Web , Feb 2, 2019
The author does an excellent job of describing the trauma faced by survivors of rape, domestic abuse, and terrorism. I was referred to this book from a website, but it does not address all the trauma a cheated-on spouse faces after a long-term affair is revealed. The book deals with specific forms of trauma, the second part with moving forward and challenges the victim of trauma to face.
