Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

In a quiet rural village in late 19th-century France, an eleven-year-old boy is found dead in his room, sexually molested and strangled by an unknown assailant. The shocked townsfolk erupt in outrage: Who could have committed this horrible crime? Rumors immediately begin to fly and suspicions shift from one person to another as ignorant conjecture begins to feed on itself. At first a vagrant is suspected; he could have come in through the open window while passing through the town at night. But in a matter of days another story begins to circulate: the culprit must be Simon, the Jewish schoolmaster, and the murdered boy's uncle and guardian. Did he not, it is rumored, resent the fact that the boy was the product of a mixed Catholic-Jewish marriage and was raised Catholic by his now deceased mother? Despite the total lack of evidence against him, as a Jew in the midst of a predominantly Christian community, Simon is completely vulnerable to these vicious allegations. The web of mendacity that is quickly spun around him is the product of centuries of entrenched anti-Semitism and the long-standing bitter rivalry between the Catholic majority of the town and an emerging secular minority.    A great listen driving smack dab in RED America!!!
I' ve been a fan of Al Franken since I was a kid, and I watched his show on SNL back in the 70s. He articulates the liberal agenda so well that I have become a bigger fan of him. I got the CDs of the book read by Al because I knew I would be making a long drive from southern Ohio to southern Alabama and Al's rattling on made it that much more enjoyable! I think his epilogue was the most moving part of the book. As my drive was winding down, it brought a tear to my eye that it was so hopeful and real. There is nothing more that a conservative Republican hates than a voter with FACTS. Give em hell, Al! I hope that you run for congress. America requires you! ?

Humor might be the only way to survive Dubya
The fact that he speaks the truth is already legendary. I don't like this administration. Bush is the worst president in the history of the United States. The damage that has come out of this presidency is disgusting. I can't imagine anyone else liking the guy other than the CEO of the company. I can get through these eight years without screaming myself hoarse or causing harm to myself and others, thanks to Al Franken. This book is filled with humor and it's good. Yes, it does contain truth as well.

   ALWAYS FUNNY
Although he's not Michael Moore, Al Franken is a good humor writer. It's difficult to judge his writing after The incident.

   serious humor...
Al Franken is smart and funny. We desperately need both in America today. I think people will enjoy what he writes.

It seems that learning and laughing work well together
I get more out of the books I read again and again. I like his humor and his knowledge is great. I' ve learned more about our political system from these books.
