Book Overview

In times of suffering, simplistic answers ring empty and hollow. But Henri Nouwen, beloved spiritual thinker and author, offers real comfort in the concrete truth of God's constancy. Nouwen suggests that by greeting life's pains with something other than despair, we can find surprising joy in our suffering. He suggests that the way through suffering is not in denial, but rather in living fully in the midst of the trials life brings our way.

Soothing words in a time of need.
Last year, I lost my wife to leukemia and have been fighting. This little book has been very helpful to me to get through from day to day. Henri Nouwen writes so delicately and with a skill that I feel is speaking directly to me and my situation.

Take a deep breath and dig in!
This book was a great price to pay for the small amount of comfort that it provided. I didn 't finish it until I put it down. With the loss of my soul mate, this book has kept me moving forward out of the past and into a fulfilling future.

This book was my spiritual companion and guide when I ...
Since then, I have read it several times. Nouwen touches something very deep and powerful and his writing shares a lot with the Buddhist-Eastern approach to being present and acceptance of life as it presents itself to us.

Turn My Mourning into Dancing by Henri Nouwen
He explores the challenges we face as mortals and the gifts that God has for us when we live as God and trust him. His chapter on our attitudes towards death was particularly good.

   Turn Your Hopeless into Hopeful
What an amazing eye opener is this! It is not preachy, but it is filled with a deep, meaningful message of hope and joy. This book will set you on the way to finding His joy and peace. The only joy and peace you can breathe through Jesus Christ is life and peace.

Another of Nouwen's many great works is illustrated by : So grateful for his insight and comforting wisdom as I walk my own path of grieving my late husband. If you have experienced the loss of a loved one, you will benefit from reading this book.

   Excellent read, especially after loss.
I bought this book after realizing that a similarly titled book by Henri Nouwen was in limited edition and would take a few weeks to reach me. After the death of my brother, and after I had to return it, I assured the kind person who loaned it to me that I would order one and finish it. I found this one and realized it was different, but was drawn by the title and it's connection to the Scripture passage. This book was gentle, but it spoke the things I was experiencing into the depths of my heart. After losing her grandmother, I gave it away to a friend and am seriously considering purchasing copies to give to those I work with who are grieving loss. This book was my introduction to the work of Henri Nouwen and I am now hooked. Since then, I have purchased The Return of the Prodigal Son, Dance of Life and Wounded Healer and have been so impressed. A great read, highly recommended.

   Not mourning a death
This is a book to read even if you are not dealing with a loved one's death. I felt the death of my mostly happy teen son's life. He had met a very controlling girl and changed his attitude and demeanor. This change has influenced the entire family. From reading this book, I was able to remember that even Jesus could not escape the pain of the cross. God wants us to remember that during all our suffering, he is with us. We are not alone with our grief.
