It’s the left that is authoritarian
How hypocritical that she sees Trump as the great threat to democracy when the left is the Silencing Freedom. She resisted a one-party system, but has little concern that the left is the great global threat to free political rights. It is also her worst book.

   Odd publication
I admit, I'm a bit starved now for anything that will help explain why half my country has such enthusiasm for the aggressive incompetence of the Trump administration. Are they not seeing the same things that I see? How can they diagnose any of his off-the-cuff speeches and listen to anything but a hapless and unqualified authoritarian? This did shed a little light on it. The craving to be told what to do. I guess it is strong citation. Here are some enlightening and engaging points to be found. But it feels like the first draft of a larger and more significant work. But it is like the first draft of a larger and more significant work. It seems to hold together overall, like someone cramming an hour long speech into about 15 minutes. Curious why an editor would green light this rather unfocused work.

   reality of change
This is a wonderful account of human reactions to their environment and how this reaction has been consistent over many centuries for a fairly steady 30% of any population. Her accuracy and insight is highlighted by some very negative comments that keep thumping the authoritarian drum. We have a huge problem, which will only get worse unless we reform our very obvious government problems. We are very damaged now to fix a very past system. Those who ignore this obvious issue have never been where ignoring reality makes you dead. There I have been.

An important work that deserves to be widely read
She makes the politics of the current time personal by telling stories of people who in Poland, Hungary, Spain, England and America become authoritarian. Her discussion with Laura Ingraham is particularly insightful. And her clear-eyed speculation about the future is sobering. Soon we will know if America will take steps towards strengthening our democratic heritage or continue our march towards authoritarianism.
