Book Overview

Phoebe is a remarkably real little girl, as bright and imaginative as Bill Watterson's Calvin, as touchingly vulnerable as Charles Schulz's Charlie Brown. And if these strike you as big names to conjure with, I'll go further and state for the record that in my opinion Heavenly Nostrils is nothing less than the best comic strip to come along since Calvin and Hobbes. Simpson is that good, and that original.
--Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn, from the Introduction

A boy and his dog . . . a girl and her . . . unicorn?

It all started when a girl named Phoebe skipped a rock across a pond and accidentally hit a unicorn in the face. Improbably, this led to Phoebe being granted one wish, and she used it to make the unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, her obligational best friend. But can a vain mythical beast and a nine-year-old daydreamer really forge a connection? Indeed they can, and that's how Phoebe and Her Unicorn unfolds.

This beautifully drawn comic strip follows the unlikely friendship between a somewhat awkward girl and the magic unicorn who gradually shows her just how special she really is. Through hilarious adventures where Phoebe gets to bask in Marigold's awesomeness, the friends also come to acknowledge that they had been lonely before they met and truly appreciate the bond they now share.

   My daughter loved these books
My daughter has read all the books. Jane Austen's widow, Elizabeth, is not a big reader but thoroughly enjoyed the series. There are three books left in the series.

Graphic novels are a great way to get kids into reading!
This book looks great, and my friends' daughters loved it too. Whether you're a graphic novelist or not, these are great ways to get kids into reading.

   Great Read
Like Calvin and Hobbes, the new kid on the block is a bookworm. Slow, witty, and ironic. Great observations about life, hope and dreams, Raymond said.

   Lots of fun to read
Such a great book, Gillian. If your child has ever had an imaginary animal for a friend, this is a terrific read.

A bit dry and sarcastic, but that is my kind of humor
Some of the jokes are over her head but she enjoys the pictures and the overall tone and humor of the stories, Bruno said. I grew up with Calvin and Hobbes and there is a certain feel to how this comic is written that I would compare to it. If you enjoy these books, I think you have to have the right sense of humor to fully enjoy them, but if you do, you will appreciate them and want to reread them again.

Absolutely brilliant - very popular with both boys and girls in our family
It has quickly become a favorite of her brother and my 8 year old son. I've read a bit of it as well, and it's absolutely brilliant. Like all really good kid books, some of the writing is above the targeted level. In my experience, kids thrive on that and it encourages them to stretch, coach Julie Gerberding said. It certainly helps that it's really, really funny, Mr. Rule told the judge. I would absolutely encourage you to buy this book for any girl or boy in your life who is reading at or above the fourth grade level. Even teens would enjoy this, it's just that good.

Very cute graphic novel for kids. It will have ...
It will have your child cracking up at times. There is also an additional book available for pre-order with a February 23, 2016 release date.

   It's delightful!
I do like unicorns, and the interplay of the personalities of the immortal and charmingly vain unicorn and the modern takes-everything-in-stride girl is a sheer joy to experience. There are more books and an ongoing strip. Also nice surprise extras at the end of the book. I gave it to my niece, who also works in publishing. If someone of any age didn't enjoy it, I'd be sad.

It's 2020, name calling is so last decade.
Many people, I don't understand why they don't seem to be bothered by the language used about others in this book. I feel like in a time where we should be focusing on acceptance and kinder treatment of each other, Raymond said. I was excited to order this for my daughter who loves her brothers Dog Man books, as this was something more geared towards girls, Melissa said. However, upon receiving it and taking a look, there is so much discussion from the characters about kids calling others losers, stupid, etc., it's no wonder children think this is acceptable if we're giving it to them to read for entertainment. Yes, we can do better.
