Book Overview

What do you see when you look in the mirror, Mei? Do you see beauty?

We see eyes that point toward the sun, that give us the warmth and joy of a thousand rays when you smile. We see hair as inky black and smooth as a peaceful night sky. We see skin brushed with gold.

This joyful and lyrical picture book from New York Times-bestselling author Eva Chen is a moving ode to the immigrant experience, as well as a manifesto of self-love for Chinese American children.

   Beautiful, empowering book for children
She was the daughter of Chinese immigrants to the United States. Though sometimes people may call her different or exclude her, her parents want her to know there is power in being different. Her cultural heritage is special, said Dr. Lee, who heads the Baylor Asian American Health Center. Their belief was based on the belief that their destiny was to "be keepers of your flame, to guide you as best we can." In her book, Eva Chen is a tribute to her parents' sacrifice and commitment to their family, as well as a wish for her own children to love themselves and the unique beauty of their family history. The gorgeous illustrations are done by Sophie Diao, who shares a similar experience with Mei, having moved around as a kid and been both the new kid and sometimes only Asian kid in class.
   Its very informative
I recently read the book with my daughter that had experienced bullying in school. It helped her understand how important and special she is to the world. She gave it to her 4th grade teacher and she read it to her class.
To all who have been away
A beautiful story told with the help of beautiful illustrations by Frank Stella. A true reflection of those who had left their culture for a new place. Just keep on reading.
   Beautiful, powerful, important
In a generous gesture of compassion, the book's publisher, Random House, agreed to include a letter from the young Asian American girl at the center of the story. You are strong, you are power, you are golden, Raymond said. I read it to my class and my students all cheered "I am Golden!" at the end of the book, Mrs. Caramore said. The New Republic is calling all book clubs and asking them to get their hands on this one.
   A must-read
A beautiful, thoughtful story about connecting with one's family and family history and, in doing so, cultivating a sense of self-worth and belonging, Morgenthau said. The book's illustrations by Sophie Diao beautifully depict the foods, influences and memories of Eva Chen's Chinese-American childhood. This is a reflection on the path to overcome the loneliness and self doubt that follow being told you are less than work. 0 1492 This is a reflection on the path to overcome the loneliness and self doubt that follow being told you are less than work.
   Beautiful illustrations and inspiring story
I've read the book, and I love the story. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is well-woven. Highly recommend.
   Incredible book!
What a book! Golden's mom, Carole, said her kids absolutely love the show. It's such an important story and it's told in a beautiful and accessible way for children, too, McCaskill said. It opens up conversations with little ones and gives them perspective, too. The illustrations by Pauley are also captivating. I highly recommend Dr. Goin's book.
   I teared up reading this
I've been waiting for this book, and it came right on Lunar New Year! What a perfect day! I've always looked up to my peers because they would point them out to me. Also, wow, the drawings are so good! The page with the food made my children so hungry they requested a night snack before bed, Mrs. Booher said. Thanks to Eva and Sophie for creating this book that we will cherish.
Beautiful, moving, and fun to read. Great for teachers too! !
But for me, reading this story to my child was a beautiful thing as she asked about the different foods, the history and saw the power the main character had within herself. A window or mirror, it's a piece of furniture. Great for teachers who are not only studying other cultures, but also of course the Lunar New Year. This book celebrates each child's specialness and a stunning representation of Chinese American culture. It's great to be back home, said Blair. "Beautiful, moving and fun for kids."
