This colorfully illustrated multicultural children's book presents Vietnamese fairy tales and other folk stories--providing insight into a rich literary culture.

Vietnamese Children's Favorite Stories is a charming collection of fifteen tales as told by prominent storyteller Tran Thi Minh Phuoc. In it, Tran--Minnesota's first Vietnamese librarian and an active member of the Vietnamese-American community--recounts cherished folktales such as The Story of Tam and Cam (the Vietnamese version of Cinderella), The Jade Rabbit, and The Legend of the Mai Flower. They make perfect new additions for story time or bedtime reading. With beautiful illustrations by veteran artists Nguyen Thi Hop and Nguyen Dong, children and adults alike will be enchanted by Tran's English retellings. Stories in which integrity, hard work and a kind heart triumph over deception, laziness, and greed--as gods, peasants, kings and fools spring to life in legends of bravery and beauty, and fables about nature.

The Children's Favorite Stories series was created to share the folktales and legends most beloved by children in the East with young readers of all backgrounds in the West. Vietnamese Children's Favorite Stories will Read More chevron_right

I loved how the stories are presented
The author is a librarian of Vietnamese heritage, and wanted to find ways to preserve the Vietnamese storytelling tradition for an English speaking audience.

Finally a great English-written Vietnamese folktales book
These are all my favorite childhood folktalesfairytales that my mother had told me or I have read about! Brought back so many memories!!! The writings are beautiful and the illustrations are exquisitely detailed and colorful. Now I can finally read them to my non-bilingual children, who have very limited Vietnamese vocabulary.

   Lovely book.
This was purchased for a Vietnamese student of first grade. It is a bit difficult for her to read herself. She told me that she loves the stories and there are some that she has never heard before. She enjoys reading it with family members.

   Would definitely buy again
I bought this for my nephew, as I wanted him to be familiar with some of his heritage and background. I ended up reading through the entire book myself and my husband, who is Indian, loved all the stories as well. The pictures are beautiful and stories are easy to follow with a good layout.

   Wonderful
I am one of the FORTUNATE teachers who have “ The United Nations '' in my room. I make sure that all my students are covered for each of my races and cultures. They are in the middle school, but they appreciate seeing all the books I purchased on display.

This gift was well received and raved about at a birthday party
This gift also opened a second conversation with an English teacher as a wonderful language teacher. If you are looking for a culturally appropriate gift, this is the book for you. If you are looking for something in the line of the art appreciation, this is also a product for you.

My 8 and 6 yo kids love this book
I bought this book for bedtime reading and to help my kids understand a little more about Vietnamese culture. To my surprise, we couldn t put the book down. Not only did it keep the kids engaged, we also learned from it and brought back so many of my childhood memories. My only wish is that there could be diacritic signs on the Vietnamese words, so that I can read it with correct pronunciation. Other than that, it is a great book.

   Good stories but poor English
Well written stories, but poor English. In word usage there are many mistakes, including the use of certain and indefinite articles.
