Stirring poems and stunning collage illustrations combine to celebrate the life of Fannie Lou Hamer, a champion of equal voting rights.
I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.
Despite fierce prejudice and abuse, even being beaten to within an inch of her life, Fannie Lou Hamer was a champion of civil rights from the 1950s until her death in 1977. Integral to the Freedom Summer of 1964, Ms. Hamer gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention that, despite President Johnson s interference, aired on national TV news and spurred the nation to support the Freedom Democrats. Featuring vibrant mixed-media art full of intricate detail, Voice of Freedom celebrates Fannie Lou Hamer s life and legacy with a message of hope, determination, and strength.

I bought this book back in Nov. So, this review is long overdue. It is a beautiful book and will transport you back through the life and achievements of Fannie Lou Hamer in the capable hands of Carole Boston Weatherford readers. And the illustrations by Weatherford are a perfect compliment to the images of Ekua Holmes'words. It is deservedly so.

An important and beautiful book
Derived From Web , Dec 14, 2021
This is a book of great importance and a real book. As another reviewer wrote, for younger children, it should be read with a trusted adult. Even a small bit of this book is pretty hard to hit. I highly recommend it if it is read with adults or elder children who can help deal with the difficult situations that happened in Fanny Lou's life and times.

Powerful, beautiful, accessible
Derived From Web , May 3, 2021
I can not say enough good things about this book. The artwork is sensitive, the parts that may be upsetting for younger children are told in a breathtaking age-appropriate way and best of all, much of the story is told through Hamer's own words. I bought this for the young girl I teach and I loved it. I also bought it for an older friend who was unfamiliar with Hamer, and it led her to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement.

Beautiful book, LANGUAGE WARNING
Derived From Web , Apr 29, 2021
The stories in this book and the illustrations that accompany them are done beautifully. There are so many valuable lessons from this book that can be derived from it. Before purchasing this book for a classroom library, as I had, please be aware that this book contains mature language, specifically the n-slur and the b-word on pages 21 and at the end in the source notes. I think that people should be aware of them before purchasing. This book is not one that I would put in my classroom library for students to access and read at anytime. I believe that reading this book should be accompanied by honest conversations about race, racism and discrimination with a trusted adult and for this reason I will use it as a resource to help me educate my future children.

Excellent and poetic biography
Derived From Web , Jun 29, 2017
This is one of the best non - Fiction - Picture books I have ever read. I love the way the author Fannie Lou Hamer has told the story of the author through free verse poetry. She also did a remarkable job of expressing these poems in the voice of Ms Hamer. It is a beautifully told story of an important figure in civil rights, about whom more people should know. Recommended for all ages, HIghly.
