Book Overview

In August 1776, little over a month after the Continental Congress had formally declared independence from Great Britain, General George Washington's young army faced off against over 20,000 British and Hessian soldiers at the Battle of Brooklyn. This was the largest battle of the Revolution, and with the Americans outmanned and outmaneuvered, it was almost the end of the war, as well. But thanks to a series of desperate bayonet charges by a single heroic regiment from Maryland, known as the Immortal 400, Washington was able to retreat and regroup. He evacuated his men to Manhattan, and the Continental Army lived to fight another day.

In Washington's Immortals, bestselling military historian Patrick K. O'Donnell brings to life the forgotten story of these remarkable men. Known as gentlemen of honour, family, and fortune, they fought not only in Brooklyn, but also in key battles throughout the war including Trenton, Stony Point, Camden, Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse, and Yorktown, where their valor and resilience changed the course of history.

Drawing on extensive unpublished original sources, including letters, diaries, and pension applications, O'Donnell weaves together the stories of these dauntless men--their friendships, loves, defeats, and triumphs. He chronicles their development into an elite unit amid struggles with dogged British opponents and hostile Read More chevron_right

   Somethings never change
I felt the tension and anguish of those who offered their service to rid Britain's hold on the colonies. But the real treatment of those who served by the newly created bureaucracy seemed very horrific, as real as today. Politicians and political appointees send politicians and political appointees to fight for it is they who reap the benefits.

Why being an American means something today...
Historical events and many unknown participants brought to life via thorough investigation, expert collaborative networking, and enlightened prose. A strongly patriotic work about American culture and American fervor by a relative few to secure a new nation built upon high principles that are still won and lost today.

Untold Stories of incredible Commitments to Achive Liberty
I thought I knew the story of the American Revolution and then read Patrick O 'Donnell's book. What a tremendous accomplishment of research that he did to write this record. At times, I almost cried when I realized the fortitude and sacrifices made by the founders of our liberty, and I do not mean the famous fathers of our nation. Patrick describes the lives of the ordinary and the battles they fought as well as the perseverance they showed, though they never lived to have a free existence. The battles are described as leading to a final independence as well as politics involved with the British crown. I have now purchased the other book I wrote on the Revolutionary War, but not yet read it. Bravo, Mr O 'Donnell!

   How easily we forget
My revolutionary war ancestor, James Patterson, is buried at the Patterson cemetery in Moultrie, Illinois, near the village of Sullivan on Patterson Road. The curator of the local historical society said that a farmer stacked them against a tree many years ago in order to avoid cultivating corn around them. He was part of the North Carolina Militia and was twice wounded by the British. Your book was captivating and inspired me to dedicate some of my time in retirement to encourage the county to restore the cemetery and to mark the final resting place of an authentic American hero.

   Facisnating, fast paced, five stars.
The book was a pleasure to read. O 'Donnell is a gifted writer and he makes great use of primary source material from the soldiers himself. In fact, one gets the impression that they know the cast of characters involved from Greene, Smallwood, Lee and Gist to Cornwallis and Tarleton. The text brings the remarkable history of a overlooked band of brothers from Maryland and follows their exploits from 1775 to 1783. They overcome some of the greatest human suffering and privation imaginable to emerge victorious. It is easy to give five stars to this book.
