Book Overview

The complete why, when, and how-to guide for parenting a one-year-old.

  • When will my 13-month-old start to walk?
  • Shouldn't my 14-month-old be talking already?
  • How can I get my picky eater to pick something besides pasta?
  • Sure, I can ignore a tantrum at home--but what am I supposed to do in the middle of the mall?
  • Why does my toddler have such a hard time sharing? Taking turns? Playing nicely?
  • When should we break the bottle habit . . . and what about the pacifier?
  • How do I get my almost-two-year-old to settle down for bed--and stay asleep all night?
Just in time for those first steps, here's the next step in What to Expect. Picking up the action at baby's first birthday, What to Expect the Second Year is the complete guide to the wonder year--twelve jam-packed months of amazing milestones, lightning-speed learning, and endless discoveries. Filled with must-have information on everything from feeding (tips to tempt picky palates) to sleep (how to get more of it), talking (decoding those first words) to behavior (defusing those first tantrums). Plus, how to keep your busy one-year-old safe and healthy.

It was not the same layout as the "What to ...
It was a far cry from the book's original layout, which had been described as "a bullet-riddled jumble of pages." I wanted something that went month-by-month, categorizing all the developments into categories such as eating, sleeping, playing, stranger tantrums, etc. In the beginning of the book they do a short overview of what to expect during the year by month, but not whole chapters. The categories are vague and I am not really sure what parts of them apply to children that are under 18 months and those that are over 18 months, Gerber said. For this reason, I gave it a 3 star rating.

   recommend with reservations
would recommend as a reference, but as other reviewers have stated, don't expect the chronological format of the 1st book.

   Helpful Book
I previously bought and loved what to expect when you're expecting, and what to expect the first year, he said. I would highly recommend this series to anyone.

   Great Book
I can't believe we made it this far, Mr. Caramore said. It is my go-to book for all my child support needs. What a great book for your 12-24 month old baby! Home Forums General Discussion Microsoft Word.

   Recommend for New Parents.
This book was originally written for the parents of newborns. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and found it to be very informative and easy to understand.

   Good toddler resource!
The second book was great, but not great. It is broken down into four categories: music, movies, and TV shows. Obviously it would not make sense to do a month by month breakdown of the first book, but I think they could have done it over 15 months, he said. The book would have been more useful to Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Rule told the judge. Though it's still a good resource, it doesn't necessarily require a second book.

   Toddlers for dummies
What a great book, not just for toddlers but for all parents, writes one of my favourite authors. It can be tedious at times, but there are some areas I really need the extra detail and I really appreciate that someone took the time to spell out every detail. This resource can be a lifesaver for someone who didn't grow up with this knowledge.

Not the same layout as the first book and HERE IS WHY! :)
Like many other people that reviewed this book, mine main complaint is that it is not structured like the first book. However, taking into account the leaps and gains children go through from one to two it is hard to determine exactly when children will hit milestones. 0 4171616 For example, it is hard to determine exactly when children will hit milestones month by month. The list of NAEYC recommendations does not include children who are not proficient in reading, writing or math. Overall, I'm a huge fan of Mark Haddon's books. Although the month by month chapters were nice for my organizational side, I understand the reasoning behind it being too late for this age.

   Equally helpful and frustrating
What I found most useful was the book's reference material, which I needed to get through my little one's second year. It gave me a little peace of mind knowing I had it on hand to reference at any moment, if I needed to. The second year is organized by categories, not by months. For example, I really loved the month to month style, but with this book it was very convenient finding everything I needed to know on that one topic, all in one place. No one has searched around for it. It would be a negative, I would read a certain topic, suddenly crucial milestones, behaviors or even a parody. Overall, I didn't like that this book's layout is different from the first book but I bought it to have as a trusted guide and tried my best to re-read the topics often to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
