Can lead reader astray because doesn't always tell the whole story

However, before the First World War, Hungary meant the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire, which included Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and other southern and eastern European countries after WWI. People are misled about their origins because of only Hungary being on the manifest of the passenger. On Page 50, it wasn't just single women who might have trouble leaving Ellis Island, but also women traveling with their children to meet their husbands who were already in the U.S. A male relative or sponsor did not have to come for them, but had to ensure that they had enough money to get to their final destination. I know because this happened in 1906 to my maternal grandmother and her 3 children. They had to house these women and children only place the officials waited for permission was the hospital island.

Great for the classroom

I used this book in my fourth grade classroom as an event in American history that influenced change in America. Students were grouped in 2-3 students and read through the book with a novel study booklet I created to follow the sequence. Students learned a lot about the event, as it was very appropriate and inclusive of history. There are pictures that also contribute to understanding and a timeline that students can follow as they read. The book is arranged in chapters that highlight the events one at a time. It was a great non - fiction resource for my classroom.

Small island, big memories!

1 star taken for stain in book 1. Alternatively, great story about Ellis Island. Hard to believe that such a small scrap of the island could become so monumental. The part that spoke about turning the eye lids of people inside out was fascinating.

As a former 4th, 5th and 6th GATE teacher, I highly recommend these books by Who Was, What Was, Where Is. They are engaging, informative and even adults learn something new. There are some information extraction pages that give historical background and perspectives that add so much to understanding for students. Don 't buy this book just ; buy the whole series. You will not be sorry.
