Book Overview

When Grandma gives you a lemon tree, definitely don't make a face Care for the tree, and you might be surprised at how new things, and new ideas, bloom.

Charms from cover to cover. --Kirkus (Starred review)

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. In this imaginative take on that popular saying, a child is surprised (and disappointed) to receive a lemon tree from Grandma for her birthday. After all, she DID ask for a new gadget But when she follows the narrator's careful--and funny--instructions, she discovers that the tree might be exactly what she wanted after all. This clever story, complete with a recipe for lemonade, celebrates the pleasures of patience, hard work, nature, community . . . and putting down the electronic devices just for a while.

   Fantastic book with wonderful illustrations
During our plant unit, I purchased it to read to my k students, because another teacher recommended it. I first skimmed the book and missed so many of the details of the story in the illustrations. I read it with my own children, ages 8 and 10, while I caught it. Some discussions we had revolved around these things : making predictions, emotions, being polite and kind, wants to earn verses needs and earning money. It pairs well with the book “Harlem Grown ”, I highly recommend this book!

   Underwhelming
I was so excited to read this book aloud to my students while they're at home. The illustrations are beautiful and there are some good messages about being grateful for what you have, while you may not get what you wanted. There is beauty in exploring something new. This book shows how the little girl unexpectedly gets her lemon tree and takes care of it. I found it, however, very boring. There are only a few words on each page and it left me as a teacher saying, That's it? While you can use this book to send important messages to your students, I wouldn t recommend it.

Quality children's literature, hard to read aloud
This book gets high marks for being a quality work of children's lit. The illustrations are gorgeous, the story is uplifting and its on-target in terms of what children are dealing with today in our world. It also works well in demonstrating diversity, city life and family values. It makes for a really awkward read-aloud in a preschool classroom or even with individual children. I wish children's authors thought more about how a story is read aloud because this one doesn't really work that way. For this reason, I returned it.

A wonderful story with great messages!
I am a second teacher who loves to teach outside the box. This book was a teacher favorite and teaches a few great messages. One message is to be flexible and show grace and thankfulness. . Even if you REALLY don 't want to. I highly recommend '' this book. We read it many times during free time, I couldn t believe that they chose this over playing with learning toys.

   Instant attraction to the eye
First of all, the colors of the cover are the first thing to draw you to the book! The cover is so colorful and inviting and who doesn 't love a story about gramma? Then you open the book and each page is filled with so much detail that you stare at the pages and don 't want to turn to the next because you are afraid that you might miss a small added detail! It is important and an especially funny life lesson today. On this picture book, Jamie and Lorraine made a great pairing!

So many reasons to love this book
I am so excitedly anticipating the arrival of this book on my doorstep and I am so in love with it. My kids and I have loved talking about the endpapers and interior art and studying the details that add to the story. The high-quality design and production includes great printing on high-quality paper and a satisfying spot gloss on the jacket. A real book shelf treasure! This book can be a great springboard for talking about the lemons in our life and how we can turn them into lemonade through hard work and the support of a loving community. This is one I won t mind reading again and again to my children and students.

   Hilarious and Heartwarming
This debut - book by Jamie L. Deenihan is hilarious and heartwarming. She takes the second person POV in an entire new level with a character and plot that is relatable and fun. The paired illustrations paired with carefully chosen words make this the kind of book you 'll want to read again. I also love how Jamie Deenihan inserts the best kind of character arc : the MC goes from Lemon Tree Skeptic to Garden enthusiast in a satisfying progression that makes sense.
