Book Overview

A comforting primer in emotional literacy and mindfulness that suggests we approach the feeling of sadness as if it is our guest.

Sadness can be scary and confusing at any age When we feel sad, especially for long periods of time, it can seem as if the sadness is a part of who we are--an overwhelming, invisible, and scary sensation.

In When Sadness Is at Your Door, Eva Eland brilliantly approaches this feeling as if it is a visitor. She gives it a shape and a face, and encourages the reader to give it a name, all of which helps to demystify it and distinguish it from ourselves. She suggests activities to do with it, like sitting quietly, drawing, and going outside for a walk. The beauty of this approach is in the respect the book has for the feeling, and the absence of a narrative that encourages the reader to get over it or indicates that it's bad, both of which are anxiety-producing notions.

Simple illustrations that recall the classic style of Crockett Johnson (Harold and the Purple Crayon) invite readers to add their own impressions.

Eva Eland's debut picture book is a great primer in mindfulness and emotional literacy, perfect for kids navigating these new feelings--and for adult readers tackling the feelings themselves

One of the best books to talk about Sadness with children
The book is wonderful. It's important to start a conversation about how sad is not a bad emotion. Sometimes it's big and sometimes it's small. It helps to start conversations about how to deal with sadness. It was well illustrated. The interior end sheets have great artwork. The front of the book has people alone, while the back has people interacting in healthy ways. It's so good!
Great book about sadness and depression
My students love talking about how sadness and depression can be pervasive, but aren't to be feared.
Better for After Sad Event Occurs
The book is cute, but more for when sadness is occurring. I wanted to talk death with my daughter before it happened, but it would be better to use after the death in the family.
Buy for yourself, kids, friends, EVERYONE
I really like this book. I use it with my kids, but I also love it for myself. I shared it with my family and friends as well. This book is very good.
   Highly recommend!
Life seemed to be sad all the time due to a recent break up, a canceled trip to Europe due to the Pandemic, and an impending birthday. A coworker read the book to me. I had to buy a copy to cheer me up. I have read it to my family and friends who are also struggling with feeling sad.
   A special book
The simple text and illustrations create the feelings in the book. It is similar to poetry. I bought it again after I told a person I was giving it away. A friend read it to me. I read it to a friend who was 6' apart on the driveway and they read it to a group of children. There is a book.
   beautiful and gentle!
I got this book for my therapy practice and it is a wonderful resource. I like the idea of sadness being a gentle but present thing that we need to attend to with kindness rather than trying to control it. There are illustrations that are lovely.
A creative way to understand sadness
To learn from sadness, be creative, even be friendly with it, and to know that it eventually leaves, is a way to not push it aside. Simple illustrations.
Had high hopes for this book. It seems like there should have been another 10 pages included. I was looking for an assist for my daughter who is struggling with her mother's death, but it wasn't an assist that I thought it would be.
   Wonderful Book
This book is simple and beautiful. My 3 year old son appreciates it and wants me to read it to him. It is a peaceful reflection on sadness. It's wonderful. I hope to see more from this author, I highly recommend it.
