Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Inspired by her blockbuster phenomenon Wonder, R. J. Palacio presents an unforgettable story of the power of kindness and unrelenting courage in a time of war.

In R. J. Palacio's bestselling collection of stories Auggie & Me, which expands on characters in Wonder, audiences were introduced to Julian's grandmother, Grandm re. Here, Palacio presents Grandm re's heartrending story: how she, a young Jewish girl, was hidden by a family in a Nazi-occupied French village during World War I; how the boy she and her classmates once shunned became her savior and best friend.

Sara's harrowing experience movingly demonstrates the power of kindness to change hearts, build bridges, and even save lives. As Grandm re tells Julian, It always takes courage to be kind, but in those days, such kindness could cost you everything. With poignant symbolism that brings Sara's story out of the past and cements it firmly in this moment in history, White Bird is sure to captivate anyone who was moved by the book Wonder or the blockbuster movie adaptation and its message.

This full-cast audio adaptation of White Bird transforms the graphic novel into a truly original audio performance.

Jewish girl in World War II in France
I enjoyed reading the wonder books and watching the tender story of Augie. This novel explores the story of Julian's Jewish grandmother and their experiences in France, as the Nazis took over and carried out their terrible purge of Jewish people. That is something that children need to learn, and this portrayal deals with situations sensitively, though honestly. It does contain scenes of killing, but not graphically represented. The main focus of the book is the relationship between Sebastian and her classmate, Sara, who helps her through this terrible time. Two sick people were gathered together by their circumstances, and it changes their lives. This would be a great book to read and discuss together whether you are familiar with Wonder or not. Another winner by a talented author, with authentic characters and a well-formed plot. The audio book was borrowed from the library. All of my opinions are my own.

   Teachers be careful
Highly disappointed '' by this book. It was such a wonderful story until the authors compare Trump to Hitler and the Holocaust. As I read the story, I was looking forward to adding this book to my classroom library, but the last part of this book is completely ruined by adding politics to a children's book. Over six million Jews killed and rounded up in a way that compares to the US border crisis. I will no longer add to my classroom.

   Absolute garbage and propaganda!
If you want to cater to the extreme leftist, this is the book for you.

   Excellent book; great for discussion.
I thought of Wonder, but I was very impressed with this book. I am appalled at the reviewers who are upset that Polacio has integrated current events and politics '' into the end of her story. How do these people believe that the Holocaust started if not for politics? Do they think that Hitler came to power magically and decided to slaughter millions of people one day? How do these reviewers believe that genocide or human rights violations begin if not for politics? During the Nazi occupation, blind eyes turned towards insidious political policies that allowed for treating human beings like animals, eventually leading to slaughtering them like animals. If reading about the parallels between the Holocaust and Trump's politics of separating children from their parents and putting them in cages makes them angry, then perhaps this book shows something about himself that you don 't like.

   Liberal indoctrination
I bought this graphic novel for my 13-year-old teenage daughter, who is interested in reading about the Holocaust and whose heart breaks for all the victims. She was very disappointed to read the author's comparison of the Holocaust with Immigration Policy. Shame on this author for trying to indoctrinate children. How utterly low?

Great graphic novel for young and old readers to learn about the Holocaust, and what makes a hero.
The first thing about the beautiful amendment is the freedom of speech. Freedom of speech was outlawed in Holocaust Europe. Whether you agree or disagree about the great references about our current political situation in America, woven into the content of White Bird, it is a subtle text to start a dialogue about the freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Great stories make us better humans and this is a great story to help us become better humans. So, focus on the big picture and remember that it isn 't us and them. Our greatest strength is our diversity, America forgets. PS I recently met RJ at our school and was as kind as Auggie and signed for every last student every last book. Remember to choose kind and consider speaking more and listening less. The artwork is breathtaking thanks to RJ!

Equates Holocaust with US Policy on Illegal Immigration
Disgustingly compares this to the 6 million annihilated in the Holocaust.

I could not put this book down! The art was amazing... I had no idea that RJ Palacio was an artist too! The characters loved. I particularly like this book '' was connected to the story of WONDER. In the back, it was also very informational. Highly recommended!

A graphic novel that needs to be listened to!
A graphic novel that you need to listen to, yep, that is right. The full cast and sound effects really bring this story to life, creating real tension that was unexpected for an audiobook. Spectacular story and I have certainly read a lot of WWIIHolocaust books. Holding back tears and so glad that this is now available for kids!

Incredibly moving story for kids and adults
As the author quotes in the introduction : Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it. This was such a wonderful opportunity to teach my daughter about the horror of the holocaust in a language and medium with which she is familiar. She read the book in an afternoon and then made me promise to devour it as well. It is not always easy for us to share these painful concepts with our children, but we live in a time where it is so important to do just that.
