Book Overview

Put on your blue suede shoes and get ready for another addition to the Who Was.? series The King could not have come from humbler origins: Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, during the Depression, he grew up with the blues music of the rural South, the gospel music of local churches, and the country-western classics. But he forged a sound all his own--and a look that was all his own, too. With curled lip, swiveling hips, and greased pompadour, Elvis changed popular music forever, ushering in the age of rock and roll. Geoff Edgers's fascinating biography of this icon of American pop culture includes black and- white illustrations on nearly every spread.

Perfect for biography reading lesson and report writing in 3rd/4th gr
The third-grade teacher bought them for her classroom. Great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing, Morgenthau said. The three years I've used them, I'm not even counting the time I was pregnant. Easy for their reading levels, informative and people they have heard of in their lives, it's just that. The students would then read their own works aloud to themselves, and then read other works that they had heard of. Had they not left these books out, they would have been reading them.

Both of them thoroughly enjoyed all of the "Who Was
Even though I am not a fan of Elvis, you can't deny the guy changed the direction the music took. I bought several of these for my daughter to read. My wife, who has read the entire book, also ended up reading it. Both of them thoroughly enjoyed all the Harry Potter films. We got new books and learned new things about each of the people or bands we got.

   Very good
I am a huge, huge fan of Mr. Presley. I recommend this book for any body, it is a great read for children and adults alike. I'm not a big fan of Dr. Goin's work, but I liked to pick it up and can't put it down. It's just that much more money.

These are great books for my students
I highly recommend this book to my students. Both are great for anyone who reads or learns from a good book.

   Not really age appropriate.
PG-13 is rated for intense sequences of violence. There wasn't a need to describe Elvis as sexy nor did we really need the creepy detail that Bill Clinton was infatuated with a 14-year-old. Because of the age of the audience, it doesn't make any sense to me. New Zealand's Consumer Council has described the products as "very disappointing."

   Elvis
Very short, very quick read. I'm not even sure that he knew me, much less that I would learn anything new about him. But just a quick catch-up or reminder of his life.

   The KING of rock
This is a great biography of a great man. Only a handful of biographers have done so, and few have done it with such passion and distinction.

   Not factual!!
My son is 8 and already a huge Elvis fan. The book was not factual at all and left the impression that Elvis Presley was a Hollywood star. My 8 year old could have written a better book. Did they do research before writing this? The timeline is wrong as iand most of the time, it's just mechanical. It's a shame they put this book out for kids to be introduced to an ICON!

Great for the Elvis Lover of any age
We love the whole line of who was collection t-shirts. We love Elvis and this is another great book in regard to him and his life, said Dr. Pauley.

   Explain Elvis
He also told me that his son asked his grandmother if it was a bust of the rock face. What a difference a day makes? It made me cringe to think how could this happen? Bought the book to learn more about the rock face. Dave is also a lawyer, so he knows what he's talking about.
