As a kid, Jackie Robinson loved sports. And why not? He was a natural at football, basketball, and, of course, baseball. But beyond athletic skill, it was his strength of character that secured his place in sports history. In 1947 Jackie joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the long-time color barrier in major league baseball. It was tough being first- not only did fans send hate mail but some of his own teammates refused to accept him. Here is an inspiring sports biography, with black-and-white illustrations throughout.

For my sheltered second grader, it was a good learning experience. There are so many things we take for granted, for example, that the best players play on major league sports teams. It is amazing that some of the best players were excluded a short time ago. As well, great inspirational story as well.

Smart & Fun, captured my 10 year old son's attention!
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
For my 4th grader, I thought the material was interesting and comprehensive enough to capture his interest. We bought this for a book report and the information was accurate and educational and fun to learn. Since then, we have bought two additional books about Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney, one for another review and one just for fun.

Jackie

I thought Arkansas a great book because Jackie inspires me to do things that Ch probably wouldn't want to do, but I think everyone should look up to him, though I am white. I still hope that the world will treat everyone equally for the bad spelling.
