Book Overview

As a kid, Jackie Robinson loved sports. And why not? He was a natural at football, basketball, and, of course, baseball. But beyond athletic skill, it was his strength of character that secured his place in sports history. In 1947 Jackie joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the long-time color barrier in major league baseball. It was tough being first- not only did fans send hate mail but some of his own teammates refused to accept him. Here is an inspiring sports biography, with black-and-white illustrations throughout.

Read this with my 8 year old, we loved it.
For my sheltered second grader, it was a good learning experience. There are so many things we take for granted, for example, that the best players play on major league sports teams. It is amazing that some of the best players were excluded a short time ago. As well, great inspirational story as well.

Smart & Fun, captured my 10 year old son's attention!
For my 4th grader, I thought the material was interesting and comprehensive enough to capture his interest. We bought this for a book report and the information was accurate and educational and fun to learn. Since then, we have bought two additional books about Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney, one for another review and one just for fun.

   Great book!!
What a great idea to bring black history facts and make them understandable for our children. The book loved. Didnt have a problem with any of the facts. Very good read, very good read.

   Jackie
I thought Arkansas a great book because Jackie inspires me to do things that Ch probably wouldn't want to do, but I think everyone should look up to him, though I am white. I still hope that the world will treat everyone equally for the bad spelling.

Not only did I receive a nice book, but I also received a very pristine letter from Book Lover Nicholas! BTW, I love the way you wrote your name and you, Nicholas, stay safe as well! Bonnie is a beautiful young woman, who lives with her husband John Ross.

We picked this up for my Black History Month project with my sons. It was an awesome book to follow and held his attention. He even brought it to school and read to his classmates.
