Book Overview

The story of one of the most influential civil rights activist of our time.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was only 25 when he helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was soon organizing black people across the country in support of the right to vote, desegregation, and other basic civil rights. Maintaining nonviolent and peaceful tactics even when his life was threatened, King was also an advocate for the poor and spoke out against racial and economic injustice until his death--from an assassin's bullet--in 1968. With clearly written text that explains this tumultuous time in history and 80 black-and-white illustrations, this Who Was? celebrates the vision and the legacy of a remarkable man.

   Martin Luther King Jr.
He deserves to be properly honored, said Goodrich, "because he was a tremendous man. Without him, I would never have met some of my beat friends.

   my son loved it
It was easy for him to read and understand, Mrs Clinton said. He was also able to do a book report that earned him an A.

   The best book ever
It's a very good book, Simon said. It was more than I expected, but I think the author should have more of these books.

   Great MLK Book
My son chose Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as his influential American for a class project. But he wanted to read more books outside of class to learn more about his life. He's 9 years old, a 3rd grader, and this book was the perfect pace and vocabulary for his age that he finished the book the same day! Easy to read, full of facts, Mr. Powell said led to more open discussion. Loved how he got engaged, Tunick said. This book wasn't hard for him to understand and in fact, made him want to know more.

Amazing series for my 3 homeschooled kiddos!
My three homeschooled children absolutely love the books. The fourth and fifth graders read them one-by-one, and the sixth and seventh graders did not. Each class will select a new book to read and write a book report on by the end of the week. Each week Amazon will release a new book based on the recommendations of the team.

A Brief Yet Very Informative Biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I bought this book for my son's homeschool education, and read aloud it to him in conjunction with lessons about the Civil Rights Movement. I found this book extremely informative, and I learned a good deal more about Martin Luther King, Jr., even after having seen a very good PBS documentary on his life on DVD a decade ago. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did accomplish a great deal of good, and it is worthwhile to read this brief yet very informative biography of his life. This brief biography is an excellent introduction to his life and contributions, said Robert Hemenway, Duke's executive vice president.

   Great book for level 2-3
Very good little book for level 2-4 readers. The book is clearly written in larger letters and very good explanations.

   Excellent
We plan on trying to buy as many of these as we can. It is recommended for children ages 4 to 9 who are looking to learn about history, places or events. The book breaks it down in an informative but digestible amount for the young reader.

   Perfect
My 6 year old got this today and absolutely loved it, said her mother. She has six African American cousins in Montgomery, Al that will say things that she herself hasn't experienced as a white kid in Arizona. My kiddo has read this yearly since receiving it and I like the way he "sees stuff." Clearly, this is an engaging site.
