Classic Caldecott winner, though not as good as more modern winners
Derived From Web , May 12, 2022
I can not tell you how many times I have read this over the years. It is certainly a classic and a guaranteed winner of the Caldecott Medal for its time, though it has somewhat diminished in my estimation with the years. There are just so many modern books that surpass it. However, for children, it is a must-read and certainly a must-have for public libraries. The artwork is so soft, thanks to the airbrushed watercolors, and the style makes me think of African art instantly. The story is a typical series of established events and then a backwards recapping of events, in this case to determine the true culprit of a crime. I will say that some parents might be a bit traumatic, contrary to the death of an owlet and the squashing of a mosquito in the book, but they are not traumatic, so that children will be fine.

... own right due to the bright colors and the easy way that the story flows to tell the cause ...

At times, it can seem like everything is tattling and blowing everything out of proportion, but at least when you get to the core, you know what is truly going on. The illustrations are amazingly captured and I like the colors amazingly down. There is a picture showing Python with two heads, but I think we are supposed to take it into context the snake in two different poses. And the dark colors, when contrasted with the bright colors, have given the story its emotional debt. This is sure to delight children who may be interested in the how - the... type of stories or even a starting step into various mythoi from around the world.

Not for Toddlers
Derived From Web , May 12, 2022
I think I read this a bit too early to my child. She is almost 4 years old and I now see that the recommended age is 5 and up, which seems appropriate after reading the story. Spoiler Alert! : The part that killed my child was the owlet that was disturbed. Once we read that part, she couldn t get past it. She wanted to know why the owlet was killed, what happened, would the owlet come back... all questions I really did not want to answer at bedtime! Having said that, this book would be better for children of school age. It is a nice series of events book type that shows the consequences of actions.

My 10 year old brought this home from the school library - the kid who has been reading Shel Silverstein, Sherlock Holmes and JRR Tolkien of late, so I was a bit surprised when I found this '' Kid's book . He says that he picked it up because it was there '' and that he really likes it. It is certainly not a novel, but a well-written story based on a West African story. Basically, it is about the chain of events that result from the actions of an over-talkative mosquito. In my opinion, it is best to read with the younger crowd, but an excellent thought provoker for all children when thinking about the effects of one's actions. A very nicely told and nicely illustrated story, but then won the Caldecott Medal for Picture Books in 1976, so that the experts '' agree with me. A beloved story from childhood
Derived From Web , May 12, 2022
I remembered this story from the 3rd grade a sat listening to the audio recording with those huge 70s earphones on. I have never forgotten the story and the wonderful artwork. I came across this book when I was choosing my summer reading at the library for my daughter. We checked it out immediately. I couldn t wait to share the book with her. As I read it, I was immediately drawn back to that time in the 3rd grade and absolutely loved the story. We read it almost every day and now we act out the story in person. The other reviewers have told the story details best, so that I will not be repetitive. This book deserves the award it received back in 1976, and should be a required reading list book for all children. The illustrations are fun, colorful, and fabulous.

Favorite!
Derived From Web , May 12, 2022
This is my favorite book for children of all time. The illustrations are the best I ever seen and while they are very creative and fascinating, they are very dark. The story itself is very good, and I love that it has a point at the end, with a moral of the story, without being a very long book. I believe that all children should read it if parents could get past the dark tone of the illustrations.

It reminds me of the days when my mother used to read the exact same story to me and now I am reading it to my little ones! Reading this classic story to my children and my children, and hopefully one day to their children, as well. From this book, smiles all around! It's awesome!
