This Description may be from another edition of this product.

This award-winning true story of Black Olympic runner Wilma Rudolph, who overcame childhood polio and eventually went on to win three gold medals, is illustrated by Caldecott medal-winning artist David Diaz.

Before Wilma Rudolph was five years old, polio had paralyzed her left leg. Everyone said she would never walk again. But Wilma refused to believe it. Not only would she walk again, she vowed, she'd run. And she did run--all the way to the Olympics, where she became the first American woman to earn three gold medals in a single Olympiad. This dramatic and inspiring true story is illustrated in bold watercolor and acrylic paintings.

   great book and message!
As a runner and mother of twin girls, I am always looking for books with strong female characters. This bill perfectly fits the bill! This is a great story of determination and perseverance, and is great for any kid, BOY or GIRL, 4 and up! Not only do girls need to hear about females they can admire, but its just as important for our boys to hear as well! Boys who respect girls grow up to be men that respect women!

   Great Book for Elementary Kids
The text was really right for her understanding and she just liked the illustrations. As she was reading it, she clutched it to her chest and exclaimed , Grandma, I love this book! '' It prompted a conversation about overcoming doubts, believing in yourself and what inspires us... a conversation I don 't think we would have otherwise.

Wilma Rudolph is an inspiration to all young people.
I respected her and knew her highly. I wrote the book for a young lady that I received as a gift. The student had never heard of Wilma and I wanted to be able to introduce her with this book to her family.

   Good Story with GREAT Graphics.
A very nice, educational biography with great illustrations that will capture and hold your child's attention. Some of the vocabulary did challenge my 7 year old, but she made it through without becoming frustrated. I am very happy about this purchase! ''
