Don't miss Barbara O'Connor's other middle-grade work--like Wonderland; How to Steal a Dog; Greetings from Nowhere; Fame and Glory in Freedom, Georgia; The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester; and more

A touching, New York Times-bestselling story about a girl and her dog, perfect for young animal lovers.

Eleven-year-old Charlie Reese has been making the same secret wish every day since fourth grade. She even has a list of all the ways there are to make the wish, such as cutting off the pointed end of a slice of pie and wishing on it as she takes the last bite. But when she is sent to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to live with family she barely knows, it seems unlikely that her wish will ever come true. That is until she meets
Wishbone, a skinny stray dog who captures her heart, and Howard, a neighbor boy who proves surprising in lots of ways. Suddenly Charlie is in serious danger of discovering that what she thought she wanted may not be what she needs at all.

From award-winning author Barbara O'Connor comes a middle-grade novel about a girl who, with the help of a true-blue friend, a big-hearted aunt and uncle, and the dog of her dreams, unexpectedly learns the true meaning of family in the least likely of places.

There is more to this book than the cover. It has to be one of my favorites of the year! Students will read this book. The book follows Charlie's attempt to fit in in a new town and his capture of a stray dog named Wishbone. Will Charlie like her new life? Will her temper stop her from making friends? Will her wish be realized? Students will love and adore the characters Charlie, Howard, Bertha, Gus and Wishbone. The fifth graders have not been able to understand Charlie's story. Barbara O'Connor's wish is to get you to NorthCaroline so you won't want to come home. It's time to add this to your TBR and library.
Good story. I thought I was in Colby with Charlie. She found out that she wanted to be with both of them. Not her mother.
   Mature content
The book states that her sister is probably hanging out with a boy in a parking lot. The book we bought for our daughter got great reviews. Amelia Bedelia is read to by my daughter. I was surprised that it had that kind of content. I wanted to let other parents know so they could make their own decisions. I purchased the book for my daughter and I would have liked to have known this. I assumed there would be more similar content throughout the book since that was the only page I read. Hope this helps someone.
   Bought for my Grandchild
Buying a book to read can be a mistake. Everyone has their own preferences on what they like or don't like. My child liked the book.
   My daughter cheered!
My daughter was laughing, crying, and cheering throughout the story. She wanted to read it again after we finished it. I think it is my new favorite.
Girl coming of age in Appalachia.
A young girl is sent to an impoverished area of Appalachia after being uprooted from her home. She found friendship with her neighbors and a stray dog because she was obsessed with finding things that would allow her to make wishes. Great story!
   Wonderful story
This is a wonderful book, with lots of life lessons and lots to talk about, it is absolutely a gem. !
   Cover smaller then book
We love books, but this one has a small defect that we can't seem to adjust to. The book cover is not as large as the book pages. !
   Front page wrongly cut!
I ordered this book for my daughter's birthday present. The front page of the book was incorrect. I have never seen a new book in this way. Is it a mistake or a special design? The front page cut is not shown in the online description. It was so surprising. Zongjun.
