Republished for a new century and featuring an afterword by Father James Martin, SJ, the classic memoir of an American-born Jesuit priest imprisoned for fifteen years in a Soviet gulag during the height of the Cold War--a poignant and spiritually uplifting story of extraordinary faith and fortitude as indelible as Unbroken. Foreword by Daniel L. Flaherty.

While ministering in Eastern Europe during World War I, Polish-American priest Walter Ciszek, S.J., was arrested by the NKVD, the Russian secret police, shortly after the war ended. Accused of being an American spy and charged with agitation with intent to subvert, he was held in Moscow's notorious Lubyanka prison for five years. The Catholic priest was then sentenced without trial to ten more years of hard labor and transported to Siberia, where he would become a prisoner within the forced labor camp system made famous in Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn's Nobel Prize--winning book The Gulag Archipelago.

In With God in Russia, Ciszek reflects on his daily life as a prisoner, the labor he endured while working in the mines and on construction gangs, his unwavering faith in God, and his firm devotion to his vows and vocation. Enduring brutal conditions, Ciszek risked his life to offer spiritual guidance to fellow Read More chevron_right

Good book, but his other book is better
His second book He Leadeth Me is better than this one. Father Ciszek doesn't give much information about what he learned from his experience. In his other book, He Leadeth Me, he goes into detail about the spiritual lessons that he learned during his time in Russia. His spiritual insights are very useful. He gives a lot of hard earned spiritual lessons and spiritual direction in his other book, He Leadeth Me, but I don't think it's as good as this one.

   Fantastic book!
Since I read Unbroken, this is the best book I' ve read. The story captured me from the beginning and while it was an auto- biography, I also learned a lot about history. Father Ciszek spends most of the first 23 pages of the book describing his imprisonment, but he rarely mentions his priestly duties. He starts to rebel against the Soviet ban on priests in the last 13 of the book, and it's brought up more often. It is an excellent, excellent read, not just for Catholics but for anyone who is interested in history as well, and for those who like a good read about an individual who never loses faith and never gives in.

   Complete trust in God
The account of Fr. is amazing. Walter Ciszek spent twenty- three years of his life under the control of the Soviets and was imprisoned for fifteen years. His experiences with the culture of death and the horrible prison experiences make it amazing that he survived. He lived his life as a Jesuit Priest even under these circumstances because of his constant faith in God. After giving one's life completely to God, this powerful book gives testament to what one can endure. It's simply amazing. When I received this book, I was afraid that it would be hard to read. I couldn't put it down once I started reading and was immersed until the end.

   Couldn't put it down
I finished two swallow books before ordering this book, but I had enough of the beach novels. I wanted to order the book, He Leadeth Me, which is about Father Ciszek's years in Russia, but it wasn't on the website. With God in Russia is a short, factual account of his life there. I didn't think it would capture and hold my interest like it did. I was unable to put it down. Father Ciszek's life in prison and out were not what I anticipated. As I read, my view of Russia changed. Father Ciszek met the Russian people along the way and I was attracted to them. I was stirred by their deep belief. The paperback copy of He Leadeth Me was ordered. I hope to understand the philosophy and faith of Father Ciszek from that book.

   GREAT book. Skip the intro.
I couldn't bring this book down. Fr. is a priest The story of Ciszek is amazing and exciting. The priest's will to survive and humor will be appreciated by catholic or not. It was absolutely captivating. This edition isn't as good as the original one, so I wouldn't give it a five star rating. The story is the same, but this edition has an introduction by James Martin that doesn't match the gravity of Ciszek's story-- like having a kid with a kazoo play the overture to a Mozart opera before the orchestra comes to the pit. The introduction was almost snide and condescending. It was sad. Ciszek is an honest to God hero of 20 th century Catholicism.

I was an easy read, but what this man experienced was not ...
I was easy to read, but what this man experienced was not the same. His experiences were shocking, unimaginable, the indignities only humans would foist on their fellow human, brutal, nauseating, nerve wrenching, and that not only did he not cave but carried his cross through the harrowing experience.

   God walked with him!
This is a true story about a man who was a priest and lived his life with love and faith. Despite the dangers, deprivations, and uncertainties, he volunteered to be a priest in Russia. He was an amazing man with faith and love, that saw him through all the years. Fr Ciszek, God bless you. May you rest in peace.

   Outstanding Book!
I think that everyone should read this book. It is a book that helps you understand what it was like to live in Russia at that time and how much faith you have in God. One of my favorite books is this one. I read this book a long time ago and still think of it. I gave a copy to a friend.

   Wonder-ful!
I read He Leadeth Me a year ago. I finished this today. I stuck with it despite the fact that it didn't have the zing He Leadeth Me has. A lot of this happened before that. I can't stop smiling after I realized what the book is about. There is a Fr. Everything Ciszek wanted was received by God. It was just wonderful!
