A brash, enlightening, and wildly entertaining feminist look at gendered language and the way it shapes us, written with humor and playfulness that challenges words and phrases and how we use them.
I get so jazzed about the future of feminism knowing that Amanda Montell's brilliance is rising up and about to explode worldwide.--Jill Soloway
The word bitch conjures many images for many people, but it is most often meant to describe an unpleasant woman. Even before its usage to mean a female canine, bitch didn't refer to gender at all--it originated as a gender-neutral word meaning genitalia. A perfectly innocuous word devolving into a female insult is the case for tons more terms, including hussy--which simply meant housewife--or slut, which meant an untidy person and was also used to describe men. These words are just a few among history's many English slurs hurled at women.
Amanda Montell, reporter and feminist linguist, deconstructs language--from insults and cursing, gossip, and catcalling to grammar and pronunciation patterns--to reveal the ways it has been used for centuries to keep women and other marginalized genders from power. Ever wonder why so many people are annoyed when women talk with vocal fry or use the word like as a filler? Or why certain gender-neutral terms Read More chevron_right

Impactful and Eye-Opening. A Must-Read

I don 't know what I expected, but I am blown away by everything I learned. Most of us don 't realize the impact of words and spoken and written communication have on the way we live our life and how we live as a society. This book is written in a conversational tone that engages the reader, making one feel respected and understood, like a conversation between friends. I don 't have the words to describe how significant this book is to our world, but the author has chosen all the perfect words to show us how our language is male-focused and patriarchal.

Meh

This has some good insights, but is dated and too set with a “cool †tone and terms. Too much young-sounding bonding tone for a book that could have been better for adults as a more serious book. Maybe the title should have clued me in.

A real pleasure to read

I read the sample last year, since the pandemic hit, there is no space for other entertainments. Reading the book, the non-digital version became my new and most interesting treat to go through hard life. On reading the title, we can see what it is about women, and language. I admire the author not only for her inspiring way to show us how the language evolves, but also for her courage to say no to inequality.

This is the best non-fiction I've ever read

In writing Wordslut, Amanda Montell's factual guide to taking back the English language, a new standard was set for the transmission of new information. She has done a lot of research and incorporated it seamlessly into the narrative. She not only explains how language has evolved as primary support for patriarchy, but also explains the subtleties of how men and women support it. Then she cleverly tells us how to combat the language that diminishes and demeans women from the streets to the boardroom. I think that everyone needs to read this book and should be taught in our elementary schools up to masters and doctoral programs, as adjuncts. This is an excellent book club to read and I would love to be a fly on the wall to listen to the discussions. It deserves 10 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book, though it took me quite a long time to read. I couldn t read it just through because I wanted to think about the things said rather than just plow through it.

READ THIS NOW!

I have never felt so many emotions reading a linguistic book. I always thought that linguistics was kind of a boring topic, but the way Amanda Montell breaks everything down makes me want to take linguistics classes. After each page, I text my friends summarizing each point.

Fun and empowering.

Well written, but in a casual non-stylish way. An excellent read for men and women, showing the gender bias in our everyday slang. Now, my holy clit bat-woman is part of my lexicon.

Truly one of a kind!!

I can only sing enough praises for this book! As someone who reads almost exclusively sociological non-fiction, I sometimes start a new book skeptical that I learn a ton of new things or be introduced to new ideas. There is a lot of repetitive information and discourse out there, especially from a feminist perspective, so that it can be hard to come across something that is impactful and inspiring. And yet it did not feel out of reach to lend to my parents or recommend to coworkers who might otherwise feel intimidated by this kind of book. In fact, it feels actively important to share! Because one of the most special aspects of it is how it makes you feel included in a community and that if only more of us could have this information, things can really change. And I am so grateful for it!
