From the visionary head of Google s innovative People Operations a groundbreaking inquiry into the philosophy of work, and a blueprint for attracting the most spectacular talent to your business and ensuring the best and brightest succeed.

We spend more time working than doing anything else in life. It s not right that the experience of work should be so demotivating and dehumanizing. So says Laszlo Bock, head of People Operations at the company that transformed how the world interacts with knowledge. This insight is the heart of Work Rules , a compelling and surprisingly playful manifesto with the potential to change how we work and live.

Drawing on the latest research in behavioral economics and with a profound grasp of human psychology, Bock also provides teaching examples from a range of industries including companies that are household names but hideous places to work, and little-known companies that achieve spectacular results by valuing and listening to their employees. Bock takes us inside one of history s most explosively successful businesses to reveal why Google is consistently rated one of the best places to work in the world, distilling fifteen years of intensive worker R&D into delightfully counterintuitive principles that are easy to put into action, whether you re a team of Read More chevron_right

Good read for any operations or HR manager.
Apart from being a huge book for Google, this is a great advertisement for them! Any operations or HR manager would benefit from reading this book, especially chapters 1,2,5,8,12 and 14.

   Decoding People Operations
Laszlo does an excellent job of explaining the origins, beliefs and approaches used by the Google People Operations team. Many parallels to our own approach, which is often inspired by what they have achieved. We documented a number of their stories in The Decoded Company, though the deeper background is very welcome here.

   Aspirational and practical
This book manages to find a balance between describing practical capabilities for an ideal people operations organization and aspirational tips for how to start improving right away. Highly recommended.

Data driven empathy - who could have imagined?
Here you get a few things very interesting insight into Google culture, atmosphere and working style, but you also get a deep data driven and analytical perspective on how they have adapted the Human Resource function to their highly data driven culture. They still care about the individual and use data as a diagnostic and tool to provide a better work environment, more active feedback, and quantify and develop excellence. It is also clear that culture starts from the top down, but I am sure that you could pick up some of the best practices and apply them quickly at any company.

Read it now or Read it later, but make sure to Read it!
Whether you are a startup company, working at a Fortune 500 or just learning about Google, this is the book for you. I kid you not, this book is for CEO's, entry level employees and even children. While all the examples are based off Google, the examples relate back to most problems with companies. Google is not the first company to go through these problems, but they have found a way to solve some of the biggest issues that businesses today have. Laszlo provides new insight into the wonderful processes created within Google to make the company grow with exponential success. I would highly recommend this book for someone who is interested in working with Google as well because it provides a lot of information about the interview process they follow. This is a great book and is easy to read. I am sure that most people can knock it out in a few days.

I am greatly energized by the insights of People Management shared by Laszlo, which meet human emotional and intellectual needs in various dimensions for a large employee base of talented people in Google. Laszlo thanks for writing this book, to share such valuable practices of a winning company. This reading provides me with new ideas to use and promote in the organization I work for. The last few days of reading this book has been an absolute association of genius and immense self-development.

   Really good
My rating gets 4 stars from me. It was interesting to read and provided a cool peek inside Google. There were parts where you would find boring very quickly if you didn 't care about human resources or ideas for properly managing people. But if you were not interested in that then why would you read it? I would definitely recommend this book to corporate business owners or professionals who are starting out in a small role. There are great insights on how to implement things to make it a more productive, open place for your employees! It would also be good for students in the field of business management. I 'd even suggest it to people who would like to learn about how large, important companies operate.
