Wretched Of The Earth
Book Overview
This Description may be from another edition of this product.
A distinguished psychiatrist from Martinique who took part in the Algerian Nationalist Movement, Frantz Fanon was one of the most important theorists of revolutionary struggle, colonialism, and racial difference in history. Fanon s masterwork is a classic alongside Edward Said s Orientalism or The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and it is now available in a new translation that updates its language for a new generation of readers. The Wretched of the Earth is a brilliant analysis of the psychology of the colonized and their path to liberation. Bearing singular insight into the rage and frustration of colonized peoples, and the role of violence in effecting historical change, the book incisively attacks the twin perils of postindependence colonial politics: the disenfranchisement of the masses by the elites on the one hand, and intertribal and interfaith animosities on the other. Fanon s analysis, a veritable handbook of social reorganization for leaders of emerging nations, has been reflected all too clearly in the corruption and violence that has plagued present-day Africa. The Wretched of the Earth has had a major impact on civil rights, anticolonialism, and black consciousness movements around the world, and this bold new translation by Richard Philcox reaffirms it as a landmark.

Not Light Reading
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
History of Fanon, kind of hand in hand with Sartre, a requirement to understand the social upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, which led to the Paris riots and all that followed. Not light reading, but certainly required of historians of colonialism, wars of liberation and all that.

Rubbish in 1963 and STILL rubbish....
Derived From Web , Sep 15, 2021
Fanon maintained that the "first and foremost" division in colonial society was race, not class. He wrote that Marx's analysis had to be "stretched" to apply to the colonies because there were "you are rich because you are white and you are white because you are rich."

Not the original translation, but an updated 21st century translation
Derived From Web , May 30, 2020
I was very upset to learn, when I opened the book, that this edition was not the original translation, but rather a 21st century translation. I thought I should have paid more attention to the description, Ms. Dhaliwal said. I don't want to read a book that was re-translated by a British writer in the 21st century. The new edition uses very different language than the 1991 edition. This is not the voice I want to read. 0 1462228 This is not the voice I want to hear. Please return it to us, get a refund, and try again with the earlier translation. I still want to read this book with the original French translator, Pauley, because I think this book is very good. Or you can download the entire book in its entirety from Amazon's free PDF download site. nan

An important, classic book that can sometimes be tedious
Derived From Web , Aug 15, 2018
This book is basically a primer on how to decolonize. In his book, Fanon goes into great detail about the dynamics among the colonizers and the colonized. I give it a 510 but I give it 5 stars because of how important this book is to me.
